1. List the categories of sources that historical researchers use and give examples for each.
When you write a historical research paper, you are creating a secondary source based on
your own analysis of primary source material. Examples of primary sources include diaries,
journals, speeches, interviews, letters, memos, photographs, videos, public opinion polls, and
government records, among many other things.
2. What criteria do historical researchers use to validate their sources of data?
As you examine each source, it is important to evaluate each source to determine the quality of the
information provided within it. Common evaluation criteria include: purpose and intended audience,
authority and credibility, accuracy and reliability, currency and timeliness, and objectivity or bias.
