Geography Project Instructions and Template

This document provides instructions for a geography project involving developing a mission statement and strategic plan to address a need in a specific location. Students are asked to identify a location and write a concise mission statement describing the desired outcome of services. They then must write at least a five page strategic plan applying various themes of human geography to achieve the mission statement. The plan should use logical progression and cite sources as needed. Sections of the plan should explore different geographic themes to address issues and solve problems related to the location's needs. Applying themes imaginatively in a consistent manner can help develop an effective strategy. Completing the project successfully demonstrates spatial awareness and applying principles to help fulfill Christianity's mission.

GEOGRAPHY PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS AND TEMPLATE

Mission Statement (replace highlighted material with your writing) You will identify a location anywhere on Earth as an area for future potential service, and will prepare a mission statement and develop a strategy to accomplish this mission using the themes or topics of human geography as guides. The mission statement will be a concise sentence identifying the location and the desired result of services to be performed. For example, Help the people of Tripoli, Libya by delivering fresh water for drinking and irrigation. The subsequent plan to achieve this mission statement will be based on the themes/ topics of human geography and will be at least five pages long and in Time New Roman, 12 point font in accordance with Turabian format. Any particular facts of information borrowed should be cited according to acceptable usage. Introduction (Why this is a topic worth exploring/solving) This service project may be characterized by, but not limited to, business, Christian service, or even a military action for the purpose of helping a particular people. The service topic you choose may already exist but the description of the problems and their characterization in terms of the geographic themes and topics must be your own. First sectional heading (Geographic theme) For example, a strategic plan to achieve the aforementioned mission statement would be, the people in Tripoli face both a shortage of fresh water and food. How would you get these resources to them? By exploring the theme of movement, we see how aspects of transportation may be the key to satisfying the delivery of water. One might want to increase the roads to this area thereby enabling one to get irrigation equipment and water to this town. Perhaps the topic of agriculture from the text would lead you to explore the idea of creating irrigation for the crops of the area. Continuing logically within the theme of movement, you may determine by marking the road signs to the town in Arabic, one uses a topic of language and the geographic theme of relative place to mark the roads in a logical manner consistent with the needs and cultural nuances of this particular area. One might even want to develop the idea of where will the trucks come from to deliver the water? Will the trucks need to come from Europe thereby necessitating sealift (theme of movement) or can they be created in an urban area nearby (topic of industry and urban geography)? The more you dig into this matter, the more themes or you should begin to see such as manufacturing. Continue following your train of thought in a logical and consistent manner; the only limit is the possible-and your imagination!

Second sectional heading (Geographic theme) Conclusion The logical application of a locations needs into a concise mission statement and a well researched and imaginatively explained plan will both demonstrate spatial awareness and the application of Christian principles. Success in this project could constitute one small step in the Great Commission we have been charged with fulfilling.
