Pretend you live in a society where everyone dresses the same. Everyone in this society always wears light wash jeans and a red t-shirt. One day as you were getting dress, you look in your closet and you find all of these different types of clothes that you forgot you ever had. You decide that youre going to wear a nice button down shirt and dark wash jeans. As you go out to walk in your society everyone looks at you as if youre an outcast. But theyre really getting ideas on how they should all dress differently to change their society. Montag from the book Fahrenheit 451 becomes different when he starts getting interested in books, and actually thinking through things clearly unlike everyone else in his society. From the book the Giver Jonas becomes different when he receives a job as Receiver of Memory in his society. Jonas also learns about so many secrets and lies in his society from his job and all he wants to do is break away from it. A big lesson learned is that being different from everyone else and standing out to a huge crowd that is all similar, is a huge key for being successful in life. Without being different no ones society and no ones life would change or have something really exciting happen, just like Jonas and Montag learn near the end of each of their stories. You will also never learn anything about yourself or even about other people in your lifetime. Fahrenheit 451 shows us that their society doesnt really feel many emotions because the people that live in this society are so absorbed in their technology. Except when Montag meets his neighbor Clarisse. Clarisse has a very open mind about ideas and ways of their
societys way of life. She also really likes to talk to Montag about his days and about her learnings from her Uncle. One day while Montag and Clarisse were talking she asked Montag if he was happy. He of course didnt really know how to respond and just cried out, Am I what? (Bradbury 10). Later that night Montag tells himself, Of course Im happy. What does she think? Im not? (Bradbury 10). Montag here really questions his feelings after hes done talking to Clarisse. It seems like he is second guessing if hes happy or not. His society blocks all other emotions out but happiness and entertainment from their technology. Montag never really thought about if he was happy before Clarisse came along and asked him that question. Since she asked that question his mind has really opened up and it has made him wonder if he really is happy and if he really likes the way society has there rules. However, in the Giver people in that society are encouraged to share their emotions and feel different types of emotions as well. In one case for example Jonas was an Eleven- year- old boy about to turn twelve. In his society though birthdays are a big thing and theyre called ceremonies. The most important ceremony you will ever go through in your life is the Ceremony of Twelves. At the Ceremony of Twelves the community gives you a job that you will have for the rest of your life. Jonas had many feelings about the Ceremony of Twelve but there was one particular feeling, Apprehensive, Jonas decided. Thats what I am, (Lowry 4). In Jonas society you can feel as many feelings as you would like, but at the end of the day you have to share them out to your family unit. Not only does Jonas community want you to have emotions they want you to communicate about them. Jonas though found out that he was the only one of his age group who felt like this. People in his age group were feeling more on the excited side then the
apprehensive side. Jonas doesnt mind being different from everyone else because he is one individual as a whole. When youre different from everyone else it makes you stand out and it can help you change your society. Unfortunately in Montags society no one really talks out about their emotions like Jonas society because theyre so brainwashed by their technology that they dont even think about sharing out their feelings and ideas. Since Montags society doesnt talk about anything but their family, or parlor, Montag sticks out because he tries to talk to his wife Mildred about his feelings or even have a normal conversation. She doesnt even know how to react to it and barley gives him any feedback at all. Or she even just repeats what he says to her. Jonas society, on the other hand, pushes you to express your feelings and to share them out at the end of every day. Then your family unit or whoever youre expressing your feelings with, will give you feedback. Jonas and Montag both stand out from their societies because Montag thinks hard about things and has questions about different ways. Jonas though is different because of his feeling that he felt before his ceremony. Jonas is not afraid of being different, but somewhat braces it in a simple way before his parents help him out of it, and Montag is afraid to be different because if he gets caught all heck would break lose. Montag has a very different way of taking things and thinking things through. This all started when he started collecting books and when he started talking to Clarisse. Montag even tries to get his wife, Mildred, to start thinking the way he does. Mildred one day found out that Montag was hiding books in the grille and that same day Beatty found out that Montag was hiding books also. Beatty told Montag that he had one day to get rid of them, and so Montag
had Mildred help him read them. The only thing was that, the parlor was dead and Mildred kept peering in at it with a blank expression as Montag paced the floor and came back and squatted down and read a page as many as ten times aloud, (Bradbury 71). Montag had purposely turned off the parlor so Mildred would focus on him and try to help him finish the books. Montag was also trying to get Mildred to understand why all of this technology was bad, and he tried to get her to think about her feelings. Mildred struggled to do so because she had no idea what to say. She just didnt know what to do and all she could really think about was the parlor. Montag was trying to make her different and snap her out of her brained washed phase. He wanted her to see what he sees and to get her to learn new ideas that books can give you. During the Ceremony of Twelves in Jonas society he was given the job as a Receiver of Memory. When Jonas gets his instructions about being a Receiver of Memory the last instruction on the list said that Jonas could lie. In Jonas society lying in not permitted, so when he looks at the last instruction he thought, the reason for precision of language was to ensure that unintentional lies were uttered. He had never, within his memory, been tempted to lie, (Lowery 71). Jonas is now being forced to do something that he has never in his life imagined to do. Being the Receiver of Memory is going against everything Jonas knows and Jonas is scared about what might happen to him and other people that he might affect. Jonas also realizes that he is going to be different from everyone else since he is allowed to do so many things that he wasnt allowed to do before he got the job.
Montag and Jonas both have perfect societies where people are kept in line but theyre kept happy all the time. Montag and Jonas both accept their societies but over time they both turn away and become outsiders from it in their own ways. Montag figures out that most people in his society dont think for themselves and he is one of the only ones. Montag tries to get other people to think the way he does and tries to convert them to how he is. Jonas on the other hand is being forced to change against his society. He has to because of the job he is given, and he is pretty resentful about it just like Mildred was to Montag when he was trying to convert her to his ways of thinking. Montag and Jonas both became different from everyone else in their society, and it stood out because Montag was acting very strange all the time and he never sat in the parlor with Mildred all the time, and Jonas was chosen to be different from everyone else in his society and everyone knew it. In Fahrenheit 451 Montag gets caught with having books in his house. Beatty, who is the chief fireman, makes Montag burn down his own house because of it. After Montag burns down his whole house he turns to Beatty and kills him, then he runs. He runs to his friend Faber and tells him what happens, and Faber tells him to leave the city. Of course Montag listens and along the way he meets up with other firemen. They would talk about why they were different and what they want to do with their lives and after one night of fire, one man started to put it out and, the other men helped and Montag helped and there in the wilderness the men all moved their hands, putting out the fire together, (Bradbury 154). Montag and the other firemen he met up with are finally breaking away from all of the madness that is going on with their society. They all finally can think for themselves, and have discussions out in the open without anyone freaking out about it. The men also have put out the craziness of their society
together by coming up with what they want to do to start changing it and actually doing what firemen are supposed to do. Help each other and put out a fire together. In the Giver Jonas realizes that his society is not right and far too perfect for its own good. He also realizes that his society has many secrets and even lies (even though lies are forbidden). The current Giver and Jonas decide that its a good idea for Jonas to run away to a place called Elsewhere. Before Jonas leaves for good, he gives the Giver a memory and says, I want you to keep that, to have with you when Im gone, (Lowery 157). Jonas left something behind for the Giver so he will always remember the greatness Jonas has done with him. Jonas also realizes that his he is breaking away from his society and away from all the secrets and lies that the society is keeping. What Jonas figures out though is that breaking free from something perfect can be extremely hard on someone but it will be alright in the end because you know that you will have reached a very different but promising future from everyone else.<--- last sentencewhat? Montag and Jonas are finally thinking on the same line of breaking free from what they all have ever known. Montag and Jonas <Repetitive are letting go from everything they ever had, to start something even better. They also are showing each of their societies that people were meant to be different and choose their own paths for their own lives. These two people show everyone that there is a huge risk for being different. What they really think though is that people should take that risk to become different because it will only lead them to greatness in the end.
Comment [A1]: how?
Being different from everyone else and standing out from a huge crowd that is all similar, is a huge key for being successful in life. Without being different no ones society and no ones life would change. Nothing exciting would every happen. or have something really exciting happen. You will also never learn anything about yourself or even about other people if everyone is the same. Montag and Jonas learn that not only is being different is a huge key for standing up for what they believe in but they learned that they also needed to be themselves. Being different isnt a bad thing especially when you learn from it. I like it
