    Interpreter of Maladies summary When Mr. Pirzada came to dine When Mr.

    . Pirzada came to dine a short story from Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. Nilanjana Sudhesna also known as Jhumpa Lahiri is the author of the book. She is a Bengali Indian who was born in Bengali and brought up in America. Her family moved to America when she was 3. She was graduated from South Kingstown High School had received her B.A in English literature from Barnard college in 1989. She has also received her M.A in English, M.F.A in creative writing, M.A in cooperative literature and Ph.D. in renaissance studies from Boston University. Jhumpa Lahiris stories are mostly about the life of Bengali Americans. She writes about how a Bengali faces many problems in a place where they have not been to before. Earlier in 1993 her short stories were rejected to publish by few publishers. Then in 1999 her Interpreter of maladies was published and she won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Then she started writing many books and one of her book called the namesake which was made into a movie. The direct translation of Interpreter of maladies is the interpreter of disease. If a doctor works in a foreign who doesnt know the local language, the doctor needs a translator to translate what are the local patients saying. Therefore a person who is interpreting the diseases or sickness of a patient to the doctor is called interpreter of maladies. Relating the topic to the book, there are many bad things in world where the bad things are related to diseases. Since she is talking about the life of a Bengali Indian facing problems in a foreign land, the problems are stated as diseases and this book is acting as an interpreter to the world. Mr. Pirzada is a Bengali Indian who came to America to research about the leaves in New England, which was granted by the Pakistan government. In summer and spring he collected the data he wanted to use and moved to Boston University to write a book based on his researches. A Bengali family was living near the Boston University who had couple of Indian friends in that University. When Mr. Pirzada moved to that University he was living in a rented room with no proper things to use. It was just a room without a proper television and a proper stove to cook. The family fond out about Mr. Pirzada and called them to dine with them every night. He agreed and started to dine with them everyday. A little girl in that family called Lilia who was very interested in knowing about the history of India. The story happened when Pakistan and India involved in a war. Mr. Pirzada a Pakistani who worried about his family who are Pakistan. Lilia didnt understand anything about the fight. When Lilia had a conversation with her dad, she found out that Mr. Pirzada is a Muslim. She didnt understand what is the difference between Muslim and Indian. This can be proved where in the book Lilia said They ate pickled mangoes with their meals, ate rice every night for supper with their hands. Like my parents, Mr. Pirzada took off his shoes before entering a room, chewed fennel seeds after meals as a digestive, and drank no alcohol, for dessert dipped austere biscuits into successive cups of tea.

    After Mr. Pirzada left America to see his family back in Pakistan, Lilia missed him and came to understand what it means "to miss someone who was so many miles and hours away, just as he had missed his wife and daughters."
