While pursuing artistic genius can be a lifelong endeavor, Philadelphia is home to a burgeoning community of galleries and museums that are well represented on the Internet. You may not know much about art, but after a few clicks of the mouse to these sites, you'll certainly have a better idea. THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART www.philamuseum.org Every year thousands run up these steps a la a certain celluloid boxer, only to stop at the top. But how many of you wouldbe Balboas have ever been inside the building itself? This site is an excellent introduction to the world-class institution. Check out information on the "Leaves of Gold" exhibition showcasing manuscript illumination (through May 13). PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS www.pafa.org One of America's oldest art museums, (founded in 1805) this stately institution on Broad and Cherry has entered the digital age with an impressive and well-organized site. The venerable museum is keeping up with the times. Check out the always outspoken Camille Paglia's appearance on March 22nd, and the PAFA's "New Land Marks" program in coordination with the Fairmount Park Art Association, helping to bring top artists to Philadelphia neighborhoods. BERMAN GALLERY www.bermangallery.com This simple but elegant site by the Old City gallery showcases American furniture and the American Arts and Crafts movement of the 1890s-1920s, with furniture from the Stickley Brothers, Limberts and Harden and pottery by such giants as Roseville, Rookwood and Grueby. OCTOBER GALLERY www.octobergallery.com Old City's renaissance of the last twenty years is due in no small part to new galleries. October Gallery features works by leading African-American artists, and their Web site includes works by Chaz Guest and contemporary master John Biggers. ANIMATION ART RESOURCES www.netaxs.com/-animart This is a terrific site by an Old City gallery devoted to one of the 20th Century's truly great art forms, the animated cartoon. Cels of animation have become hot collectibles, and you can check out a great selection of them at reasonable prices. Among the featured artists here are Joe Barbera (who created a cartoon empire with William Hanna) and animator Myron Waldman, who helped bring Popeye and Superman to the screen.
