Animals can be classified into vertebrates and invertebrates based on whether they have a backbone or not. Vertebrates can further be classified into groups such as fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals based on their characteristics.

Animals can be classified into vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals while invertebrates do not have a backbone.

Fish live in water, have slimy scales, are cold-blooded, breathe through gills and reproduce through external fertilization. Amphibians can live both in water and land, have moist skin, are cold-blooded and breathe through gills when young but lungs when adults. Reptiles live in water or land, have hard dry scales, are cold-blooded, breathe through lungs and reproduce through internal fertilization.
