1. The diagrams show a simple pendulum at the ends and centre of its swing. Which labeled arrow shows the distance moved by the pendulum during one period?

2. The speed-time graph is for a car as it accelerates over a period of 50 s.

What is the acceleration of the car when the time is 30 s? A. 0 m /s2 B. m/s2 C. m/s2 D. 25 m/s2

3. The diagram shows a simple pendulum. It swings between X and Y.

Which sequence should be timed to measure the period of the pendulum? A. X O B. X Y C. X Y O D. X Y X

4. The graph shows part of a car journey.

What distance is travelled by the car in the first 20 s? A. 100 m B. 200 m C. 300 m D. 400 m

5. The diagram shows a micrometer.

Which reading is shown? A. 2.23 mm B. 2.73 mm

SECTION B 1. A simple pendulum swings between A and C as shown in Fig. 1.1.

Fig. 1.1 A student starts a stopwatch as the pendulum bob, moving from A to C, passes B. He stops the watch when the bob, moving from C to A, next passes B. The reading on the stopwatch is 1.0 seconds. (a) What is the period of this pendulum?

[1] (b) Explain how the student could obtain a more accurate measurement of the period of the Pendulum, without using any extra equipment. ......................................................................................................................................... ......................................................................................................................................... ......................................................................................................................................... ........[2] 2.

3. (a) (i) What is meant by the period of a pendulum? [2] (ii) Describe an experiment to set up a simple pendulum of length 1.0 m, and to make an accurate measurement of its period. [6] (b) Fig. 3.1 shows part of a ruler that has been placed on a sheet of paper in order to measure the distance between two parallel lines A and B.

Explain why the person using the ruler should, in turn, look vertically down on line A and then on line B to obtain an accurate measurement of the separation. [2]
