Introduction
League of Legend had a close beta from April 10, 2009, to October 22, 2009, and was release on October 29, 2009. League of Legend is an action RTS online game that is well spread over many countries like America, Europe and Asia. An action RTS game is a game that is action real-time strategy. In this sense, it is a fusion of action games and real-time strategy games. The players are split in to two teams of 5 people and compete with each other. Each player can choose a champion to control from a variety of 94 unique characters and the numbers of characters are still increasing.
Game Play
The main goal of the game is to destroy the enemies base, or call a Nexus in the game. In order to do that, each teams nexus will spawn a group of minions to attack with the player. On the other hand, there will also be turrets to defense the attack. Here is some of the information about the game content.
Summoners
Summoners, what you as a player represent. As a summoner, you can do several things that make you different from the other players: - Summoners level: The summoners level are the players level in the game and level 30 is the maximum. Each level will gain a mastery point to assign to the masteries and unlock a new runes spot or a summoners spell. Summoners spells: You can choose two summoner spells from fourteen different spells to bring into the game. Each spell has different usage, and knowing what spells to choose to go with your champion is very important. The spells introduction page in the game looks like this in Figure 1.
(Figure 1: Summoners spells page) Masteries: Masteries can be treating like a skill tree. Each icon represent different bonus adds to your champion. The bottom icon will have more bonuses because it requires a specific amount of points contribute to the category. There are three categories in the masteries which is offence, defense and utility. Each player only have 30 points to distribute so make sure you know what kind of assign is best for the champion you are playing. There are a total of 20 pages can be save on an account so you can have different ways to assign for different champion. The masteries page in the game look like this in Figure 2.
Runes: Runes can be purchase in the game store and also add the bonus to your champion. There are four types of runes: Marks, which is based on offensive. Seals which is based on defensive; Glyphs which is based on magic and Quintessences which is based on utility. Assign the runes with your champion need is a good way to increase the power of it. There are only three empty runes pages for the player in the game initially, but you can always purchase new empty page in the game store. The runes page in the game look like this in figure 3
Champions
Champions are what the character call in the game. There are currently ninety-four unique champions to choose form but the number will be increase as the company constantly making new champions. Champions in the game can be put into four categories: ADC, APC, Tank and support. - ADC Or known Attack Damage carry, DPS (Damage per Second) are the main physical damage dealer in the team. The champion has high attack damage and attack speed but doesnt have lots of health point or mana point. This kind of champions usually are long range because the can deal damage in a distance and have higher mobility. APC Or known as Ability Point carry, are the main magic damage dealer in the team. The champion has a high burst of skill combo and AoE
damage which is Area of Effect damage that can deal damage in an area. This kind of champions have high mana point but the cool down on their ability are longer. Tank Almost is the main core of the team. Tanks main job is to protect the teammate damage dealer and take the damage from the other team. These kinds of champions have very high armor, high magic resist and high health point. Their abilities usually are used for protecting teammate or preventing the enemys abilities. Support As the name of the position, is to support the other players. They usually can heal, restore mana or to buff the other players for a period of time. This kind of champions are low on health point and dont really do lots of damage to the other team. You can gain experience point in the game by killing those enemy minions and killing the enemy champion. Each champion has three different kinds of skills and one ultimate skill. You gain a skill point every time you level up to distribute the skill. The maximum level for the champion in game is eighteen, which is level five for each three skills and level three for the ultimate skill. Different skill of different champion all have their cool down time which the skill can be used again. The champions are show in the figure 4
Items
There is an item shop locate at the base of the team, each player will have 475 gold
to start with, the gold will generate slowly as the game goes on. You can also gain gold by killing the other player or assist; you will gain more gold if you kill a player that is on killer spree which means the player had kill lots of your teammate without dyeing. Killing enemy minions or camp minions and destroying turrets can also help you gain gold. Items can buff your champion by adding attack point or ability power and etc. The more expensive item is the more value it is. The shop also has the recommended items for the champion in case you are not sure what to build or how to build the champion. This is that the item shop in the game looks like in figure 5.
Map
The map is pretty big and has three different main paths to go, usually call top, mid and bot. You dont gain vision if you are not on the main path and are call fog of war; you have to walk in to it to gain vision. There are also bushes on the map (Figure 6) and have similar function with the fog of war, but the different part is that the player in the bush can gain vision of surrounding but the player outside the bush dont have the vision inside the bush. The mini map shown in the game is Figure 7.
Minions/Turrets
Minions are the creeps control by AI and all they do is to push the lane and destroy turrets. Minions will attack the enemy minions automatically and will change the target to you if you are attacking the enemy champion. You can gain gold and
experience point by killing those minions. Turrets have high damage and high armor to prevent you from pushing in to the enemy base. Each team has eleven turrets, three on each lane and two in front of the Nexus. The turrets will attack the minions first and then attack the player, but will switch target if you are attacking enemy champion in turrets range. This is a close up turrets looks like in the game in figure 8, and close up minions in the game in figure 9.
Shop
The shop in the game is a place where you can spend IP, which you gain by winning the game, to purchase champions, runes or skins. The game provides ten free rotate champions for you to play with but you dont own them. If you like the champion and want to use it on the week they are not free, you can always buy it in the shop with IP or RP. You can also purchase RP with real money and use the RP to buy things in the shop. Skins can change the champions outfit or looks different then default skin, but will not add any additional buffs to the champion. This is what the shop interface look like in the lobby in figure 10.
Conclusion
Gaming industry now days are getting bigger and bigger, it is fun to play some game but not addict to it. It is not enough to know the entire concept and the content of the game League of legend by reading on paper. The best way to know the game and love the game is to play it yourself, you will find out more strategy and tips when you are playing the game.
