The paper formulates the fundamentals of the modern ecological theory of the multifunctional (polyfunctional) role of biota in the molecular-ecological mechanism of water quality formation and self-purification of aquatic ecosystems. The theory covers the following items: (1) sources of energy for self-purification mechanisms, (2) the main structural and functional units of the selfpurification system, (3) the main processes involved in the system, (4) contributions of major taxa to self-purification, (5) system reliability and supporting mechanisms, (6) the response of the system as a whole to external factors, (7) details of the operation of water purification mechanisms, and (8) conclusions and recommendations for biodiversity preservation practice. Imbalance of Factors Providing Control of Unicellular Plankton Populations Exposed to Anthropogenic Impact

Published in 2001. Innovative analysis of the factors that create environmental balance as related to plankton. The research of the author proved that one of these factors removal of plankton by organisms that are filter-feeders is vulnerable to new types of chemical pollution. This in turn provides a new hazard: a cause that may lead to an outbreak of abundance of plankton. The paper contributes to a better scientific basis for proper management of water resources, and water quality sustainability. The theory of the hydrobiological mechanism of water self-purification in water bodies: from theory to practice
Sergei A. Ostroumov New data on effects of chemicals (surfactants) on water filtration by aquatic invertebrates are reported. The theory covers the following: sources of energy for the mechanisms of self-purification; the main functional blocks ...
Effects of several surfactants and chemical mixtures on marine bivalves were studied. An anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), and a cationic surfactant, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA), inhibited the filtering activity of oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Similar effects were exhibited by some chemical mixtures that included surfactants. Those mixtures inhibited the filtering activity of Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis.
