often involving a set of parameters or unknown inputs. It defines a task in broad terms. A problem
instance, however, is a specific, concrete version of that problem, which is created when you provide
actual values for the parameters. For example, "sorting a list of integers" is a problem, but "sorting
the list ``" is a problem instance. The ability to distinguish between the general problem and a
specific instance is fundamental because a successful algorithm must provide a correct solution
for every possible instance of the problem, not just a select few.

• Important Points:

• Problem: A general description of a task (e.g., finding the shortest route between
two cities).

• Problem Instance: A specific case with concrete inputs (e.g., finding the shortest
route from London to Paris using a particular map).

• Algorithms are designed to solve problems, meaning they must be robust enough to
handle any valid instance.

2. Generalization and Special Cases

Generalization is the process of taking a specific problem and creating a broader, more abstract
version that can handle a wider variety of inputs or situations. It involves identifying the core logic
and making it more flexible. On the other hand, focusing on special cases means analyzing a problem
under specific, often simplified, conditions. For instance, a generalized problem is sorting any list of
items, while a special case might be sorting a list that is already sorted or contains duplicate
elements. Both are crucial: generalization leads to versatile and reusable solutions, while examining
special cases helps identify edge cases and potential points of failure in an algorithm.

• Generalization: Broadening a solution's applicability (e.g., moving from a function


that sorts integers to one that sorts any data type).

• Special Cases: Focusing on specific scenarios (e.g., an empty input, a single-item

3. Types of Computational Problems


Computational problems are categorized based on the kind of answer they seek or the task they are
designed to perform. The most common categories are decision problems, which require a simple

problems, which ask for the number of possible solutions; and optimization problems, which aim to
find the best possible solution from a set of all feasible solutions (e.g., the shortest path, the lowest
cost, or the maximum profit). Each type of problem often requires a distinct algorithmic strategy.

4. Classification of Problems

Polynomial time). Problems in P are considered "tractable" as they can be solved efficiently. NP
problems are those for which a potential solution can be verified quickly, though finding a solution
may be extremely difficult. The question of whether P equals NP remains one of the most significant
unsolved problems in mathematics and computer science.

found for one, it implies a fast solution for all NP problems.

• NP-Hard: Problems that are at least as hard as any problem in NP.

5. Analysis of Problems

requirements, constraints, and objectives are thoroughly examined before any attempt is made to
design a solution. This involves identifying the core task, defining the expected inputs and outputs,

7. Algorithm Development

analysis and chosen solution approach into a concrete set of unambiguous instructions. This process
includes selecting appropriate data structures to hold the data and carefully defining the sequence of
operations to be performed. The resulting algorithm is often first sketched out in pseudocode or a
flowchart to clarify the logic before it is implemented in an actual programming language.

• An algorithm must be finite (it must terminate), unambiguous (each step must be
clearly defined), and have well-defined inputs and outputs.

8. Analysis of Algorithm
