Dear Race Participant, We want to thank you for participating in this years inaugural Cavern City Classic Ominum. We are excited about the challenging course that we have put together and about being part of the NM Road Series. With the continued support of a great cycling club, sponsors and local city officials we will continue to fine tune and put together a quality event that gives back to our community and cycling. This race attracts many spectators, especially at Saturdays loop course through Happy Valley that finishes at the entrance to Living Desert State Park. We would like to leave a LASTING POSITIVE impression on everyone attending this event. Please be on your best behavior since you are representing our event, your team and cycling in general. Also this race is supported exclusively by volunteers so please be polite to our volunteers and dont hesitate to thank them for their assistance in making this race a reality. All volunteers will be wearing yellow t-shirts with Toss No Mas on front and Volunteer printed on the back. In addition to the USA Cycling Rulebook www.usacycling.org/forms/USAC_rulebook.pdf) you are responsible for reading and following the rules set forth in this race bible. The following items are of particular importance: Parking: Park only where indicated Portable Toilets: Nothing will get us kicked out of a venue faster than using private property as a toilet. Helmets: Once registration opens until the race is done and results are posted, helmets must be worn and secured at all times while on a bicycle. Road Race Traffic: Is open to traffic. We will have Carlsbad Police and Eddy County Sherriff officers to assist with traffic control. Litter: Please do not discard water bottles, gel packets, etc on the side of the road. GENERAL INFORMATION AND SCORING POLICIES


This is a 2-day race with the winners determined using the Ominum scoring method as defined by the USA Cycling (USAC) 2012 Ominum Rules. The winner from each category will have the most points over the course of the 2-day race.

REGISTRATION
PRE REGISTRATION Online registration is at www.newmexicosportlineonline.com we have a limit of 100 riders per category (50 for Men Cat 5). NO REFUNDS NO EXCEPTIONS. LATE registration will be available on Friday evening, April 20 ONLY from 4-6:30 pm at the NMSU-C Gym. Check-in (to verify race license, sign release form, get bib numbers, etc) will be available on Friday evening, April 20 from 4-6:30 pm at the NMSU-C Gym. Check-in/registration must be completed 30 minutes before your races start time in the NMSU-C North Parking Lot. NO rider substitutions or replacements are allowed. Riders must register for the category listed on their USA Cycling license. Riders will not be allowed to change their category at the race. Riders must have a current USA Cycling license. ONLY Men Cat 5 and Women Cat 4 are eligible for one-day licenses. Both annual and one-day licenses will be available for purchase at registration. Note: two one-day licenses will be required if entering both stages.

SCORING
Riders MUST complete each stage in order to be eligible for Ominum prizes.

TIME BONUSES
There are no time bonuses.

RESULTS
Results will be posted on Saturday and Sunday afternoon after the last race is finished at the Best Western Stevens Motel in the hallway, behind the main lobby. Address is 1829 South Canal. FINAL RESULTS will be posted online at www.carlsbadvelocyclingclub.com and reported to USA Cycling (www.usacycling.org) within 1 week of event completion. THESE RESULTS ARE FINAL.

PROTESTS
DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL YOU HAVE REVIEWED THE FINAL POSTED RESULTS! Protests for the each road race must be made to the Chief Judge Jeff Freeman.

CENTERLINE
All roads are open to traffic. Obey and respect all police officer, official, and staff requests. If you cross the centerline you will be disqualified! If no painted centerline marking exists, riders must keep to the right side of the road at all times.

RACE NUMBERS
Each rider will be given two (2) bib numbers in their race packets (see Registration, page 5). DO NOT CUT, FOLD, WRINKLE or ALTER NUMBERS! All riders MUST WEAR BOTH bib numbers for all stages. If you do not wear both bib numbers you will be assessed a penalty! Numbers must be worn on the lower part of the jersey just above the jersey pocket and along the side seam as shown to the right.

JUNIOR GEAR RESTRICTION


All juniors have gear restrictions. Please refer to the USA Cycling Rulebook 1M6 and 1M7 for equipment restrictions.

PRIZES
Rider must be present at awards ceremony to collect prizes. Prizes will be awarded only to those riders who complete both stages. There are no prizes for individual stages.

STAGE 1 ROAD RACE, C-HILL LOOP


Saturday, April 21, 2012 LOCATION: The Road Race will begin on the north side of the New Mexico State University Carlsbad (NMSU-C) campus. NMSU-C is located at 1500 University Drive just south of US 285 on the north side of Carlsbad, just west and behind of Lowes. Please drive carefully and watch for cyclists on the roadway. Roads are open to traffic. Obey all traffic laws. PARKING is available in the north parking lot of the NMSU-C campus. Comply with parking directors instructions. CHECK-IN: There will be tables in the north end of the NMSU-C North parking lot for number pick up and race day check in. Check-In/Registration must be completed 30 minutes prior to the races start time. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course is open to traffic. The start line is approximately 100 yards west of University Drive on the road that forms the north boundary of the NMSU-C campus. The first lap of the course is approximately 13.5 miles. Each succeeding lap is approximately 12 miles. The roadway is a mix of two lane road and divided highway, 2 lanes in each direction. The two lane roads have little to no shoulder. The multiple lane highway is US 285 and it has a good shoulder. The terrain is flat with several rollers. According to Map-My-Ride, there is a category 5 climb in the first loop going west on Church Street. From the entrance of the high school to the top of the hill is about 0.6 mile. The end of each loop is a one mile climb with 350 feet elevation at 5-12% grade. Centerline rule is in affect (see page 6). View the course map on page 10. An elevation profile appears on page 11. There will be course marshals and law enforcement officers at the start and on the course. Distances and starting times for each category are as follows:

COURSE HAZARDS There is a cattle guard immediately after making a right turn from US 285 onto Skyline Road at the beginning of the one mile hill climb described in course description. Much of the course is on roads with limited or no paved shoulder, be alert to changing conditions.

WARM UP The course is closed to warm-up session after 7:45 am. We recommend warming up on a trainer if possible. VEHICLES The course is open to traffic. A sweep vehicle will be on the course at all times to pickup riders, if needed. NEUTRAL WHEEL SUPPORT Wheels will be considered neutral (meaning anyone can have a wheel) if there are surplus of wheels. If there is not a sufficient quantity (as determined by the officials) then wheels will be dispensed on a wheels in/wheels out basis. It is your responsibility to check with your follow vehicle before your event. If you received a spare during the race please be considerate and return it immediately following the race. Campy or other special requirements bring your own wheels! Wheel drop off - Take spare wheels to the follow vehicles at least 30 minutes before your race with the approved wheel tag. Wheel tags will be available at packet pickup and sign-in. Post race wheel pickup Wheels will be returned to the start area. Please pickup your wheels immediately following your race. The Carlsbad Velo Cycling Club, sponsors, officials and volunteers are not responsible for any equipment left at the race. FEEDS The feed zone will be on the east side of NM524 (Happy Valley Road) just north of Shooting Range Road, the beginning of which will be marked with a sign. NO feeds are allowed on the FIRST or LAST laps of this road race. See the map on page 10 for the location of the Feed Zone. Support personnel who are going out to feed need to go out before the race starts and on the return they should not get on the course and follow behind the racers. Support personnel are also responsible for cleaning up - no bottles or trash of any kind left behind. In addition, volunteers will be at the feed zones to hand up water bottles. RESULTS Results will be posted throughout the day in the hallway behind the main lobby at the Best Western Stevens Inn. See page 6 in regards to protests.

STAGE 2 ROAD RACE, TOUR de POTASH


Sunday, April 22, 2012 LOCATION: The Road Race will begin on the north side of the New Mexico State University Carlsbad (NMSU-C) campus. NMSU-C is located at 1500 University Drive just south of US 285 on the north side of Carlsbad, just west and behind of Lowes. Please drive carefully and watch for cyclists on the roadway. Roads are open to traffic. Obey all traffic laws. PARKING is available in the north parking lot of the NMSU-C campus. Comply with parking directors instructions. CHECK-IN: There will be tables in the north end of the NMSU-C North parking lot for number pick up and race day check in. Check-In/Registration must be completed 30 minutes prior to the races start time. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course is open to traffic. The start line is approximately 100 yards west of University Drive on the road that forms the north boundary of the NMSU-C campus. The course will begin with a neutral start that will take riders through residential areas that border Lake Carlsbad. We are publicizing this in the local media. Please be aware of spectators. The race will begin when riders turn left onto US 62/180 (also known as Greene Street and the Hobbs Highway). The roadway is a mix of two lane road and divided highway, 2 lanes in each direction. Most of the two lane road has little to no shoulder, the exception being the WIPP Relief Route (near the end of the course). The multiple lane highway is US 62/180 and it has a good shoulder. The terrain is flat with several rollers. According to Map-My-Ride, the race finishes with a category 5 climb, which is the same elevation profile as Stage 1. This is a one mile climb with 350 feet elevation at 5-12% grade. Centerline rule is in affect (see page 6). View the course map on page 14-16.
