Brief History/Introduction of the Department

Textile engineering is a multidisciplinary program that focuses on the design, production, and
application of textile materials. It incorporates conventional and advanced approaches to
textile manufacturing, aiming to meet the evolving demands of industries worldwide. Textile
engineering plays a vital role in a country's economic development by producing materials
for domestic use and export.

The primary goals of the textile-engineering program are to provide comprehensive

education, train specialized engineers for the textile industry, and foster creativity and
problem-solving skills in a rapidly changing global environment. It also aims to advance
research critical to Ethiopia's textile and garment sectors, supporting innovation and global
market competitiveness.

Recognizing the need for professionals in textile manufacturing, the Ethiopian Institute of
Textile and Fashion Technology (EiTEX) at Bahir Dar University is committed to launching
graduate programs in textile engineering, enabling undergraduates to specialize locally. To
achieve the program's objectives, key modules are designed to equip graduates with
interdisciplinary knowledge and strong problem-solving skills.

Name of the Program

The degree awarded to students who successfully complete the minimum requirements is:

 English: B. Sc. in Textile Engineering

Program Objectives

Main Objective:

To provide broad-based knowledge and skills in textile engineering, emphasizing state-of-

the-art education in fiber, spinning, weaving, knitting, technical textiles, nonwovens, and
textile testing. The program focuses on delivering solutions to financial, environmental, and
social challenges in textile production, with a research-oriented perspective.

Specific Objectives:

 Train professionals for education, research institutions, and industries.

 Produce skilled experts and managers to meet industrial demands.
 Provide opportunities for professionals to upgrade their knowledge.
 Conduct research in product design, development, and management practices.
 Engage students in industry-relevant research projects.
 Provide consultancy services to the community and industry stakeholders.
 Equip students with skills for careers in public and private sectors.

What is Interesting About the Program

The textile engineering program combines science, technology, and creativity to design and
develop advanced materials for various applications. Students gain knowledge in fiber
science, fabric production, dyeing and finishing, and innovative technologies such as
nanotechnology and smart textiles. The program's multidisciplinary nature prepares graduates
to work in diverse industries, including fashion, automotive, aerospace, construction, and
healthcare.

Technical and Advanced Textiles

Medical Textiles: Specialized fabrics designed for healthcare and medical applications,
offering functionality, biocompatibility, and safety. They are classified into implantable and
non-implantable materials.

Nano and High-Performance Textiles: Advanced materials offering enhanced strength,

durability, flexibility, and specialized functions. Nanotechnology provides water repellency,
UV protection, antimicrobial properties, and thermal regulation.

Textiles in Automotive Applications: Used for seat covers, carpets, headliners, airbags, seat
belts, and insulation materials, contributing to safety, comfort, and efficiency.

Textiles in Construction: Used for reinforcement, insulation, filtration, and waterproofing,

enhancing the performance and durability of building projects.

Protective Textiles: Engineered to provide protection against heat, fire, chemicals, radiation,
extreme weather, and biological agents. Used in firefighting gear, military uniforms, and
industrial safety clothing.

Textiles in Rocketry and Aerospace: Designed to withstand extreme temperatures, pressure

differences, and radiation. Spacesuits, parachutes, and skydiving suits are key applications
ensuring safety and performance in aerospace missions.

Admission Requirement

The B.Sc. in Textile Engineering program targets high school graduates with university entry
qualifications and diploma holders with relevant backgrounds. The program spans five
academic years, with total 300 ECTS and 18 modules, and includes two semesters per year.
The program plans to enrol 120 students per academic year, with potential expansion based
on stakeholder needs.
