Palms

Palms are one of the most well-known and extensively cultivated plant
families. They have had an important role to humans throughout much of
history. Many common products and foods are derived from palms, and palms
are also widely used in landscaping for their exotic appearance, making them
one of the most economically important plants. In many historical cultures,
palms were symbols for such ideas as victory, peace, and fertility. Today,
palms remain a popular symbol for the tropics and vacations.

Other note
Currently, few extensive phylogenetic studies of Arecaceae exist. In 1997,
Baker et al. explored subfamily and tribe relationships using chloroplast DNA
from 60 genera from all subfamilies and tribes. The results strongly showed
that Calamoideae is monophyletic, and that Ceroxyloideae and Coryphoideae
are paraphyletic. The relationships of Arecoideae are uncertain but it is
possibly related to Ceroxyloideae and Phytelephantoideae. However,
hybridization has been observed among Orbignya and Phoenix species, and
using chloroplast DNA in cladistic studies may produce inaccurate results due
to maternal inheritance of the chloroplast DNA. Chemical and molecular data

Is an obligate, root hemiparasite. It is photosynthetic and mainly obtains
water and mineral nutrients from its hosts. The haustoria borne on the roots
of Nuytsia attach themselves to roots of many nearby plants and draw water
and therefore nutrients from them. Almost all species are susceptible to
attack, haustoria have even has been found attached to underground cables.
In natural settings Nuytsia withdraws relatively little from each individual host
but is attached to so many other plants that the benefit to this parasitic tree
is likely to be considerable.

Common name
White tamarind

The tree has long been naturalized in the East Indies and the islands of the
Pacific. One of the first tamarind trees in Hawaii was planted in 1797. The
tamarind was certainly introduced into tropical America, Bermuda, the
Bahamas, and the West Indies much earlier. In all tropical and near-tropical
areas, including South Florida, it is grown as a shade and fruit tree, along
roadsides and in dooryards and parks.

Evergreen tree (Tamarindus indica) of the pea family (see legume), native to
tropical Africa and cultivated elsewhere as an ornamental and for its edible
fruit. The tree grows about 80 ft (24 m) tall and has featherlike leaves. It
bears small clusters of yellow flowers and plump pods that do not split open.
The soft, brownish edible pulp contains 1 – 12 large, flat seeds that are used
in Oriental foods, beverages, and medicines.

Xanthorrhoea is a genus of flowering plants native to Australia and a member

of family Xanthorrhoeaceae. The Xanthorrhoeaceae are monocots, part of

The Grass Tree can grow for up to 600 years. It is a very slow growing plant
with the trunk taking over twenty years to develop, and on average they
grow from 1 to 2 centimetres a year.

Its cultural and historical value to Australia’s indigenous community has been
well documented. The flowering spike not only made the perfect fishing spear
but also when it was soaked in water the nectar from the flowers gave a
sweet tasting drink. In the bush the flowers were used as a compass. They
would open in conjunction with the sun’s arc. Birds and insects are attracted
to it and it makes a wonderful landscape plant.

It is illegal to take grass trees from the bush unless you are a licensed
operator, and so the best way to obtain them is through a nursery. Each plant
is given a tag to show that it has been professionally handled.

Other note
In addition to its use as an ornamental plant, the flowers and leaves are also
used as an herbal medicine, either in the form of lavender oil or as an herbal
tea. The flowers are also used as a culinary herb, most often as part of the
French herb blend called herbes de Provence.

Lavender essential oil, when diluted with a carrier oil, is commonly used as a
relaxant with massage therapy. Products for home use including lotions, eye
pillows—including lavender flowers or the essential oil itself—bath oils, etc.
are also used to induce relaxation.
Common name
Emerald green

Plant taxonomy classifies 'Emerald Green' Arborvitae under Thuja

occidentalis. 'Emerald Green' arborvitae is one of its cultivars. The common
name for these conifers is often misspelled, "arbor vitae" (technically, when
spelled as two words, it's a part of the human anatomy, not a tree). The term
is Latin and means "tree of life," due to the alleged medicinal value of its
resin. Oddly, this is a case in which

If the typical dimensions for this plant are still too big for your needs, they
can be pruned in early spring (before any new growth) to a size with which
you are more comfortable. Since this tree is not drought-tolerant, water well
during hot summers and mulch generously to hold in some of that water.

'Emerald Green' arborvitae usually reaches just 12'-14', with a spread of 3'-4'. Its foliage
comes in flat sprays and, if you look closely, the needles appear covered in scales.
Common name
Saucer Magnolia

Common names for the Saucer Magnolia include Tulip tree and magnolia.
Saucer magnolia trees are deciduous flowering trees, their showy flowers are
large and goblet shaped and may vary in color from light to deep pink. The
size and shape of the blooms are what gave the Saucer Magnolia its common
name. When fully opened into the "saucer" position the petals range from 5"
to as much as 10" in diameter.

Magnolia delavayi

In addition to the beauty of the fragrant blooms the Magnolia has showy, big
and broad dark green leaves. This tree is great for any type of landscape and
displays silvery-gray bark in winter. Flowering begins at an early age and
provides a mass of color. This beautiful specimen is a 'Must Have' for all
Magnolia-lovers! Saucer Magnolia makes an excellent gift for new
homeowners!

Rose of Sharon

Rose of sharon is a deciduous flowering shrub. Generally speaking, rose of

sharon bushes can get 8'-10' tall and have a spread of 4'-6'. However, some
cultivars stay shorter (e.g., Hibiscus syriacus 'Minerva' reaches only 5'-8').
Blooms on rose of sharon can be white, red, lavender or light blue; some have
double blooms. Most rose of sharon bushes bear small, deeply-lobed, light-
green leaves (may vary according to cultivar

It's easiest to give rose of sharon its desired shape by pruning it accordingly
during its first two seasons. It can also be trained for espalier.

Other note
Its attractive and plentiful blooms make rose of sharon plant fully capable of
holding its own as a specimen. One's ability to shape rose of sharon also
makes the shrub a prime candidate for hedges. But since rose of sharon bush
is deciduous, it makes an effective privacy hedge only in summer. It could be
used to achieve privacy around swimming pools, for instance. However, be
aware that its blooms could attract unwanted bees.

Rose of sharon blooms profusely, and its attractive flowers are its main selling
point. Like other types of hibiscus, rose of sharon's flowers bear a striking
stamen. Another feature giving the shrub value is its relatively late period of
blooming (in the Northeastern U.S., it blooms in August). Rose of sharon is
thus able to offer color when many shrubs have long ceased blooming. A
heat-lover, rose of sharon is also prized by growers in the Southeastern U.S.
who crave plants that can stand up to summer's heat. The plant is reasonably
drought-tolerant. Don't give up on rose of sharon, thinking its dead just
because it hasn't leafed out by early summer. Rose of sharon not only blooms
late, but leafs out late, as well.
