Extended Drama Script: The Midnight Visitor

Adapted and expanded from the short story by Robert Arthur

Characters

Ausable – A clever but unimpressive-looking secret agent

Fowler – A young writer, new to the world of espionage

Max – A rival agent, dangerous but nervous

Henry (Waiter) – Hotel staff (non-speaking)

Receptionist (Voice-over) – Heard on phone/intercom

Voice of Max’s Boss (Optional voice-over)

SCENE 1: Hotel Corridor – Night

(Dim lights. Footsteps echo. Ausable walks slowly; Fowler follows.)

FOWLER (looking around):

This is the glamorous life of a secret agent?

AUSABLE (dryly):

Disappointed? The corridors don’t creak mysteriously enough?

FOWLER:

Honestly, yes. I expected something more dangerous.

AUSABLE (chuckling):

Stick with me, Fowler. Danger doesn’t knock. It breaks in.

(They enter the room and close the door.)

SCENE 2: Inside the Hotel Room

(A small but tidy hotel room. Curtains are drawn. A phone on a desk. Ausable puts down his
hat.)
FOWLER (looking around):

You really live here?

AUSABLE:

Temporarily. The food is terrible, but the walls don’t talk.

FOWLER (sits):

I’m beginning to think this whole spy business is boring.

AUSABLE (smiling):

Wait five minutes.

(Suddenly, the door bursts open. Max enters with a gun.)

MAX (firmly):

Hands up. Move away from the desk.

FOWLER (jumps up, scared):

Wh-who is this?

AUSABLE (calmly):

Max. The last man who broke into my room didn’t bring a gun. He wasn’t so smart.

SCENE 3: The Tension Builds

MAX (angrily):

I want the report. The one you’re getting tonight. Hand it over.

AUSABLE (relaxed, lights a cigarette):

So it’s true. You really don’t know how to knock.

MAX:

I don’t have time for jokes!

FOWLER (to Ausable):

Is this serious? Is he… is he going to shoot us?

AUSABLE (to Fowler, still calm):

Only if I don’t talk fast enough.

(To Max)

So, the famous report. Pity. You see, you’re already too late.

MAX (suspicious):

What are you talking about?

Ausable’s Balcony Trick – Expanded

AUSABLE (gets up and walks toward the window):

Do you see this window? I had it replaced last week. The balcony outside—it stretches
across several rooms. Very inconvenient.

FOWLER (curious):

You have a balcony?

AUSABLE (calmly, to Max):

I complained to the management. I told them it was dangerous for a man in my line of work.
Anyone could slip across from the next room.

MAX (edgy):

What are you trying to say?

AUSABLE:

So they agreed to block it off. But the work never got done. Which is why tonight, the Paris
police are keeping a watch from the balcony. They’re waiting for the delivery too. Maybe
even for you.

MAX (tenses up):

Police? On the balcony?

AUSABLE (nodding):

I warned them someone like you might turn up. And here you are. Perfect timing.

(Max is visibly shaken. He looks toward the window nervously.)

SCENE 4: Escape

(Sudden knock on the door. Max panics.)

MAX (raising gun):

That’s them! I’m leaving. Out the balcony!

AUSABLE (shrugs):

Go ahead. I wouldn’t wait if I were you.

(Max dashes to the window, opens it, climbs out, and disappears.)

SCENE 5: Truth Revealed

(Ausable opens the door. Henry the waiter enters with a tray.)

AUSABLE (to waiter):

Perfect timing, Henry.

(Waiter exits. Fowler stares at Ausable in disbelief.)

FOWLER:

He… he went out the balcony. Are we safe?

AUSABLE (lighting a cigarette):

Oh yes. There is no balcony.

FOWLER (jaw drops):

You made all that up?

AUSABLE (smirking):

Improvisation. The first tool of a real agent.

SCENE 6: Fowler’s Realization

FOWLER:

You outwitted a man with a gun… using words.

AUSABLE:

Exactly. Words are better than bullets. Less mess.

FOWLER (grinning):

I came for a story. I found a legend.

AUSABLE (smiling):

And you haven’t even seen tomorrow’s headlines.

(They share a laugh as lights fade.)

OPTIONAL SCENE 7: Max’s Fate (Voice-over or Shadow Scene)

(From behind the curtain or off-stage, Max’s terrified voice is heard.)

MAX (off-stage, yelling):

Wait! Where’s the ledge?! There’s no—AAAH!

(Silence. Then the lights come back on Fowler and Ausable.)

FOWLER (softly):

What if he fell?

AUSABLE (coldly):

He shouldn’t have climbed out.
