MGMT 3191 Operations Research Distance Assignment

The document outlines an assignment for Operations Research at Bahir Dar University, focusing on various optimization problems related to linear programming, including profit maximization and cost minimization scenarios. It includes multiple questions requiring the formulation of linear programming models, graphical solutions, and optimal allocations for different case studies. Additionally, it covers topics such as assignment problems and project management with time estimates.

INSTRUCTION
The following questions are workout questions for which you are expected to provide all the necessary steps and
interpretations.

1. ABC fashion Company makes two types of bag; travel bag and back bag expecting to get a profit birr 150 and
birr 180 per each piece of bag respectively. The three resources required are fabric, thread and zipper. The
Company is limited to use its fabric for making 50 pieces of travel bag or 20 pieces of back bag per week while
the supply of thread cannot make more than 36 pieces of travel bag or 24 pieces of back bag per week. The
weekly available zippers can make only 30 pieces of either types of bags.

A. Formulate a linear programming model for this problem? 2 pts

B. Solve this model by graphical approach? 4 pts.

2. Grain Processor Company uses par-time and over time machine operators during peak demand season. A par
time operator can process 16 quintals of grain per day whereas an overtime operator can process 12 quintals per
day. A par time operator generates about 0.5 quintals of defective grains whereas an overtime operator produce
about 1.4 quintals of defective grain. A permanent operator is paid $64 per day, and a temporary operator is paid
$42 per day.

The company has 40 machine workstations. The company expects at least 450 quintals of grains processed with
no more than 25 quintals of grain defectively processed each day. If the company wants to determine the number
of permanent and temporary operators to hire in order to minimize costs:
A. Formulate a linear programming model for this problem? 2 pts
B. Solve this model using graphical approach? 4 pts

3. A furniture producing Company make and sell Chair, table, book shelf and cabinet expecting to earn a profit of
400, 600 , 300 and 100 respectively. The Company’s monthly supply of wood, metal and bolt direct raw
materials and the per unit requirement of these direct raw materials for each furniture products are given below:
Raw material
