Department of Civil Engineering

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY CALICUT

Winter Semester 2020-2021, Assignment - 1
ZZ1001D – ENGINEERING MECHANICS

Maximum Marks: [10*1=10]

1. The flat surface of an ergonomically designed key for a computer keyboard is

approximately defined by points A, B, and C and is subjected to a 1 N force in the direction
normal to the key’s surface.
(a) In Fig. 1(a), motion of the key is in the z direction. Determine the components of
the force in directions normal and tangent to the key’s motion.
(b) In Fig. 1(b), the motion of the key is in the direction of the line connecting points
D and E, where this line has x, y, and z direction cosines of 0.123, 0.123, and 0.985,
respectively. Determine the components of the force in directions normal and
tangent to the key’s motion.

2. The relative velocity of approach v⃗ of a space debris towards a triangular window is

shown in Fig. below. What are the components of v⃗ in directions tangent and normal to
the window?

3. Determine the resultant moment (cartesian vector) produced by the two forces about point
O, as shown in Fig.

4. Determine the resultant moment produced by the forces about point O for the system
shown below.

5. Determine the moment about AB produced by the force F=200N (as shown in Fig.) which
tend to rotate the rod about the AB axis.

9. Consider the steel column of a single storey building with the system of parallel forces as
shown in the Fig. Determine the magnitude of FA and FB such that the resultant force passes
through origin O of the given column. Use only vector approach to solve the unknowns
given.

10. Convert the given parallel force system in the table that exerts the four forces on the floor
surface as shown in the figure to a single equivalent force system using vector approach.
