Road Safety

1. What are some common road safety practices?

Pedestrians
• Look both ways before crossing any road in order to look out for
oncoming cars
• Utilise designated pedestrian crossings instead of jaywalking because
cars would already have stopped for the pedestrians
• Be on constant alert as you make your way across the road because
things can change very suddenly while on the road
• Refrain from all sorts of distractions (conversations, playing, mobile
devices)

Cyclists (on the road)

• Always wear a helmet to mitigate potential injuries in case of an accident
• Wear bright-coloured clothing, especially at night, to ensure visibility
• Attach flashing lights at the front and back of your bicycle in order to alert
cars to your presence
• If cycling in a group, maintain a single file rather than travelling abreast
in order to be considerate to other road users

Drivers
• Ensure that your seatbelt is worn at all times to avoid being catapulted
from the car in the event of a sudden stop
• Do not exceed the speed limit. This makes it easier for cars to come to
a complete stop
• Obey traffic rules and signs (especially stopping at traffic lights)
• Use the indicator lights to signal your intentions before turning or
changing lanes
• Refrain from all sorts of distractions (especially from the usage of mobile
devices) in order to respond to situations at split-second notice
• Do not tailgate (stay too close to the car in front)
