Motivation
Imagine a world where every step you take contributes to a cleaner, greener
planet. Footstep power generation using piezoelectric sensors turns this vision into
reality by converting human motion into usable electricity. This revolutionary
technology harnesses the mechanical energy of footsteps, transforming everyday
movement into a renewable power source. By embedding piezoelectric sensors in
highfootfall areas such as sidewalks, shopping malls, and railway station we can
create a self-sustaining energy system. This electricity can be used to power
streetlights, charge electronic devices, or supplement local energy grids, reducing
reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.

CMR Institute of Technology 3

Objective
To design and implement a system for harvesting electrical energy from
human footsteps using piezoelectric sensors. The system aims to convert mechanical
energy from foot pressure into electrical energy, which can be stored and utilized
for lowpower applications such as street lighting, sensor networks, or charging small
electronic devices. The objective also includes optimizing energy efficiency,
durability, and cost-effectiveness for practical deployment in high-footfall areas like
sidewalks, malls, and public transport stations.

Introduction

▪ Footstep Power Generation Using Piezoelectric Sensors With the increasing

demand for renewable and sustainable energy sources, footstep power
generation using piezoelectric sensors has gained attention as an innovative
way to harvest energy from human movement.
▪ This technology utilizes piezoelectric materials, which generate electrical
energy when subjected to mechanical stress.
▪ The concept is simple: when people walk on a surface embedded with
piezoelectric sensors, their footsteps apply pressure, causing the sensors to
convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
▪ This energy can then be stored in batteries or directly used to power lowenergy
devices such as LED lights, sensors, or mobile chargers.

AURDINO UNO:

▪ The Arduino Uno is based on the ATmega328 microcontroller, a

popular and versatile chip.
▪ The board has 14 digital input/output pins and 6 analog
input pins for connecting sensors and devices.
▪ The board has a 16 MHz ceramic resonator and a USB
connection for easy communication with a computer.
▪ The board can be powered via USB, an AC-to-DC adapter,
or a battery, making it flexible and portable.

▪ The board features an ICSP plug and a reset

button, allowing for easy programming and troubleshooting

PIEZOELECTRIC SENSOR:

▪ The force or vibrations which are mechanical

energy is converted to a corresponding voltage
by the piezoelectric transducer.
▪ The low voltage generated in the order of 2-3
volts is stored in the battery to charge the
controller.
▪ The voltage level can be enhanced using a boost
converter circuit.

LCD DISPLAY:

▪ LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a flat-panel

display technology commonly used in TVs,
computer monitors, smartphones, and other
electronic devices.
▪ It works by using liquid crystals that do not emit
light directly but instead modulate a backlight to
produce images

RECARGEABLE BATTERY:

▪ A rechargeable battery, also known

as a secondary cell, is a type of
battery that can be reused multiple
times by recharging it with
electricity.
▪ Unlike disposable batteries, which
are used once and then discarded,
rechargeable batteries can be
charged and discharged repeatedly,
making them a more sustainable
and cost-effective option.
