Designing efficient solutions in Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) often


involves recognizing and applying well-known patterns. Here are some of the top
patterns commonly used in DSA problems:
1. Sliding Window
This pattern is used for problems involving arrays or strings that require finding
subarrays or substrings of a certain size.
 Use Cases: Maximum sum subarray of size k, Longest substring with at
most k distinct characters, Minimum window substring.
 Approach: Maintain a window that satisfies the problem constraints and
slide it to explore the rest of the array/string.
2. Two Pointers
This pattern is useful for solving problems involving sorted arrays or linked lists
where two indices traverse the structure from different directions.
 Use Cases: Two Sum (sorted), Remove duplicates from sorted array,
Triplet sum to zero.
 Approach: Use two pointers to reduce the time complexity by avoiding
unnecessary iterations.
3. Fast and Slow Pointers (Tortoise and Hare)
Used for detecting cycles in a linked list or array.
 Use Cases: Detect cycle in a linked list, Find the starting point of a cycle,
Happy Number.
 Approach: Use two pointers at different speeds; if there is a cycle, they
will eventually meet.
4. Merge Intervals
This pattern deals with problems involving overlapping intervals.
 Use Cases: Merge intervals, Insert interval, Meeting rooms.
 Approach: Sort intervals and merge them while iterating through the list.
5. Cyclic Sort
Used for problems involving arrays containing elements in a given range.
 Use Cases: Find the missing number, Find all missing numbers, Find the
duplicate number.
 Approach: Place each element at its correct position and identify the
misplaced elements.
6. In-place Reversal of a Linked List

 Use Cases: Reverse a linked list, Reverse a sub-list, Rotate a linked list.
 Approach: Reverse the links between nodes in-place by adjusting
pointers.
7. Tree Traversals

 Use Cases: Inorder, Preorder, Postorder traversal, Level order traversal.
 Approach: Use recursive or iterative techniques (with a stack or queue) to
traverse the tree.
8. Graph Traversals

 Use Cases: Depth-First Search (DFS), Breadth-First Search (BFS),
Connected components.
