Assignment Questions - Computer

System Overview (Detailed Brief

Answers)
1. Basic architecture of a computer
A computer system is made up of five main components:
1. Input Unit – It accepts input from the user and converts it into binary form for processing
by the computer. Examples include keyboard and mouse.
2. Output Unit – It converts processed data from binary into a human-readable form like
text, graphics or sound. Examples include monitor, printer, and speakers.
3. Central Processing Unit (CPU) – This is the brain of the computer. It includes:
- Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU): Performs calculations and logical comparisons.
- Control Unit (CU): Directs all operations in the system.
4. Primary Memory – Also called main memory, it stores data and instructions temporarily
during processing. Types include RAM and ROM.
5. Secondary Storage – Used for long-term storage of data. Examples include hard disk
drives, SSDs, CDs, and pen drives.

2. What is input unit? What is its significance? What does input consist of?
An input unit is a hardware component that allows the user to enter data and instructions
into the computer. Its main function is to convert user input into a binary format (0s and 1s)
that the computer can understand.
The significance of the input unit lies in the fact that computers cannot directly understand
human language or actions. Therefore, input devices like the keyboard, mouse, and
microphone help translate human actions into digital signals.
Computer inputs may include letters, numbers, commands, mouse clicks, or audio signals.

3. Function of CPU and its subunits

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the main processing unit of the computer. It executes
instructions and controls all activities of the system.
It includes three main subunits:
- Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU): Responsible for mathematical operations (like addition,
subtraction) and logic operations (like comparisons).
- Control Unit (CU): Directs the movement of data between CPU, memory, and I/O devices. It
fetches and interprets program instructions.
- Registers: Small memory units inside the CPU that store intermediate data during
processing.
