MODULE 5 Assignment
Marine life is very important as this gives us food and it's part of the environment. it is very
important to protect the sea, specially whats in it without the marine species theres no food.
polluting the sea will also affect weather and climate condition. there are types of marine
pollution that can be prevented during voyage for the safety of sea and help the
environtment.
Types of marine pollution:
OIL POLLUTION - It is cause by oil spillage or leaks it is
common accident to liquid tanker vessel. this leads to
poisoning the sea life, which can destroy a portion of sea
because oil can spread through out the ocean.

GARBAGE POLLUTION - This is caused by improper

throwing of garbage to the sea such as plastic, food waste,
and other solid materials from ships or coastal areas.
because plastic can entangle marine animals or ingested,
causing death or illness.

SEWAGE POLLUTION - It is a dischrage of untreated or

inadequately treated human human waste from ships or
coastal towns. it increases bacteria and nutrient levels,
which can lead to oxygen depletion and disease spread.

BALLAST WATER POLLUTION - When a ship takes ballast

water for stability, there are invasive species that can get in
to the ballast water and can be brought to other region and
can threaten local ecosystems. When happens it can lead
to ecological imbalance, affecting fisheries and native
marine species.

CHEMICAL POLLUTION - This is caused by the release of

toxic chemicals, such as cleaning agents, cargo residues, or
industrial runoff. this affects reproduction and survival of
marine organisms, and can enter the food chain.
NOISE POLLUTION - Caused by engines, sonar, and
underwater construction, it disrupts communication and
migration of marine animals, especially whales and
dolphins.

THERMAL POLLUTION - Occurs when ships or coastal

industries release heated water into the sea. it alters water
temperature, affecting the marine species sensitive to heat
changes.

Protecting the marine environment is a vital responsibility of every seafarer and shipping
company. It involves following international regulations, maintaining good shipboard practices,
and ensuring no harmful substances are discharged into the sea.
BASIC PROCEDURES:
COMPLIANCE WITH MARPOL REGULATIONS - By following the MARPOL convention annexes,
marine pollution can be avoided such as oil pollution, noxious substances, sewage, garbage, air
emissions, and ballast water.

PROPER HANDLING AND DISPOSAL OF OIL AND OILY WASTE - By using Oil water separators
(OWS) and maintain the Oil Record Book (ORB). And discharge oily water overboard unless it
meets MARPOL discharge criteria.

GARBAGE MANAGEMENT - By segregating, treat, and store garbage properly and dispose of it
only at an authorized port reception facilities. And following the Garbage Management Plan by
MARPOL Annex V.

SEWAGE AND WASTEWATER CONTROL - By treting the sewage in an approved sewage

treatment plant before discharge. Comply with MARPOL Annex IV to avoid contamination of
coastal waters and beaches.

CHEMICAL AND HAZARDOUS MATERIAL HANDLING - Following the IMDG Code for handling
dangerous goods. Avoid spills, and report any accidental discharge immediately.

BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT - By complying to ballast water management convention. and

treat and manage ballast water to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species.

PREVENTION OF AIR POLLUTION - Using low sulfur fuel and maintain exhaust gas cleaning
system. and by complying to MARPOL Annexes VI to reduces SOx, NOx, and CO2 emmisions.

TRAINING AND AWARENESS - Conducting regular training and drills on pollution prevention.
This promotes environmental awareness among crew and officers to ensure best practices.
everal international maritime laws and conventions have been established to protect the
S
marine environment from pollution caused by ships and human activities. These laws are
enforced globally to ensure safe, clean, and sustainable seas.

Legal Requirements:

MARPOL - There is six annexes in MARPOL, each covering specific type of pollution. such as
Annex I (Oil pollution), Annex II (Noxious liquid substances), Annexes III (Harmful substances in
packaged form), Annex IV (Sewage), Annex V (Garbage), Annex VI (Air pollution from ships). this
are the primary international law governing marine pollution.

BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT CONVENTION (BMW CONVENTION) - This prevents the

spread of invasive aquatic species through ballas water. This requires ship to install ballast
water treatment systems and follow ballast exchange procedures.

INTERNATIONAL MARITIME DANGEROUS GOODS (IMDG) CODE - This regulates the safe
transport of hazardous materials at sea. It prevents chemical spills and environtmental
contamination through packaging, labeling, and stowage rules.

INTERNATIONAL MARITIME DANGEROUS GOODS (IMDG) CODE - This regulates the safe
transport of hazardous materials at sea. It prevents chemical spills and environtmental
contamination through packaging, labeling, and stowage rules.

LONDON CONVENTION AND PROTOCOLS - This prohibits dumping of waste and harmful
substances into the sea from ships. And promotes pollution prevention through waste
management.

PORT STATE CONTROL (PSC) AND FLAG STATE - Port states inspect foreign ships to ensure
compliances with international laws such as MARPOL, SOLAS, etc.flag states are responsible
for enforcing these laws on ships under their registry.

TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION (STCW CONVENTION) - This requires all seafarers to be trained
in marine environmental protection. and promotes awareness of legal obligations and pollution
prevention practices.

The impact of marine pollution to marine life has a serious and far reaching consequences this
can also affect people, industries, and the environment as a whole. the damage caused by
pollution can be long lasting and in some cases, irreversible. like such can change climate and
weather condition, and can affect the food chain.
