Project1 Applications Reviewed
1. Introduction
In recent years, many students consider to study language through apps, especially
English, rather than taking a course which is saving more time, money and even more
effectively. The development of Technology and Artificial Intelligence which is
known as AI help students approach learning worldwide. According to Vietnamnet
Global, in 2022, Vietnamese spent average 17 minutes per day to study foreign
language on online apps, most of them chose Duolingo to study. By that time,
Duolingo’s global data showed that Vietnam, China and Japanese was top three
countries that spent most time using their apps. Many students these days also enjoy
to learn language on apps, the number raised up to 27% in 2024 than the previous
year based on AI learning apps gain 142 million users in 2024, up 27% (2024) by
Sheryl Miles.
However, there are many factors to consider using online apps to learn. These
factors are including the convenience and accessibility, the quality of teaching, cost
effective.
[1.] 1. According and understanding these factors will help students consider which
platform they want to use to study new languages, and what is the impact of learning
through apps. Aim of study
Chat GPT or specific applications in some student’s field such as AutoCad help
bringing some useful sources in their major. Moreover, this will help students create
good personalities such as self-discipline, more proactive in learning.
Learning new languages through applications also helps students cost less than
traditional learning methods, they no longer have to waste a lot money in printing
documents because the apps have already provided the necessary materials for
learning, of course students also need to pay a certain amount of money but the cost
will be more reasonable than printing the materials continuously. Plus, apps will
update new documents and lessons regularly for students. This will give students the
best experience in broaden their knowledge.
In conclusionde, engaginge in learning by using educational applications will be
the best foundation for students to be more effectively, encourage them to study more
by their own. This research will analyseis about the benefits of studying through
educational applications.
1.2. Research questions
This project we will concentrate on research for the benefits and the attitude of
students using apps for studying English.
- How effective is studying English through learning applications?
- What are students’ attitudes toward using applications for learning English?
2.[1.] Literature review
2.1. Language learning applications
From Fei V Lim, Weimin Toh of National Institute of Education, Nanyang
Technological University(Lim & Toh, 2024), look at apps as falling on a scale—from
ones that help with simple thinking skills to ones that encourage more complex and
creative thinking such as (1) quiz apps, (2) puzzle apps, (3) platform apps, (4)
augmented reality apps, and (5) virtual reality apps.
- Language learning apps are digital applications designed to help users learn a new
language through interactive exercises, lessons, and quizzes. These apps utilize
technology to make language learning more accessible and easy, often use things like
game-like elements, repeated practice over time, and content made by users to make
learning more fun and effective.
2.2.[1.2.] Benefits of Language Learning apps
2.2.1. Vocabulary
Also, they reported that Quiz apps are tools that let teachers make quick quizzes
for students to complete on their phones or tablets. Some of the apps used included
Quizlet, Quizizz, Kahoot, Duolingo, Socrative, and Words&Birds. Twelve studies
showed that these apps were used to help students learn languages Eight studies (Cho,
2021; Çinar & Arı, 2019; Dreyer, 2014; Guaqueta & Castro-Garces, 2018; Ludwig,
2018; Montaner-Villalba, 2019; Quiroz et al.,2021; Toy & Büyükkarci, 2019)
reported that quiz apps provided positive gains in vocabulary learning for students.
From that report, Toy and Büyükkarci (2019) observed that EFL learners experienced
enhancements in vocabulary learning, including word recognition and reading
comprehension, after engaging with the Quizlet app for eight weeks. Likewise, Çinar
and Arı (2019) found that using Quizlet for four weeks led to increased vocabulary
test scores and better retention. In addition, students developed a more favorable
attitude toward their English lessons after using the app. From that data, Fei V Lim
and Weimin Toh have shown that most students improved their vocabulary from
study through applications especially using Quizlet. By using apps can help them
memorize it easier and faster.
2.2.2. Grammar
Next is using Puzzle apps to support vocabulary and improve grammar learning.
These apps provide lessons with games that engage users in problem-solving
activities involving skills like logical reasoning, pattern identification, sequence
completion, spatial awareness, and word formation. These apps featured web-based
mini-games, interactive jigsaw puzzles, and card creation games. The average of time
that took to improve both grammar and vocabulary was 3 to 4 weeks with about 40
minutes of studying per day due to their research with eight students.
2.2.3. Skills
This time, Fei V Lim and Weimin Toh did the research with ten other students. Ten
students have indicated that platform-based applications can enhance reading and
writing abilities, including elements of vocabulary and grammar. For example,
Tanduklangi et al. (2019) implemented a four-week instructional period utilizing the
Edmodo platform. In terms of reading skills, Chen et al. (2016) found that EFL
learners demonstrated enhanced oral reading fluency after using Moodle along with
the Qu-voice digital pen. Similarly, Alpala and Peña (2014) observed that EFL
students improved their writing abilities through text writing workshops conducted
via the Virtual Room app. In a 12-week study, Qaddumi (2021) reported that students
taught using Edmodo showed progress in both reading and writing. Expanding
beyond these areas, Yeşilbağ and Korkmaz (2021) discovered that learners who
participated in Voki-supported activities for six weeks experienced gains in speaking
skills. Additionally, Shaikh et al (2021) noted that EFL students who engaged with
DynEd for eight weeks showed improvements in listening, writing, and reading.
Since virtual reality (VR) apps are still new, only three studies were found that
looked at their use in secondary school classrooms. These studies showed that VR
apps help students improve their listening and speaking skills. For example, Wu et al
(2014) found that EFL students got better at communication after using a digital board
game with VR features like immersion and presence. Next was Chien et al (2020)
reported that EFL students enhanced their communication skills through the use of a
spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) environment, which immersed them in
authentic English-speaking contexts. Students in the VR-based instructional group
demonstrated greater progress in both vocabulary acquisition and speaking
proficiency.
2.2.4. Motivation
Research on augmented reality (AR) applications has shown that they enhance
student engagement and interest in language learning. In a study by Frazier (2017), an
AR-integrated iPad app was used in ESL/EFL classrooms over a three-day period.
The activity centered around solving a mystery in an augmented reality crime scene,
requiring students to collaborate in groups using the app. Frazier (2017) found that
this experience fostered critical thinking, as students were able to interpret messages
and connect the clues to the meanings of objects used in the activity.

[3.] Research questions
This project we will concentrate on research for the benefits and the attitude of
students using apps for studying English.
- How effective is studying English through learning applications?
- What are students’ attitudes toward using applications for learning English?
2.3. Needs and desires
Students needs nowadays become more and more because of the requirements
from the traditional method. Learning in traditional ways require students to bring a
lot of different kind of books for theories. However, study through apps can solve this
problem, study apps can provide lessons for students immediately when they can read
it directly through the app with internet or download it into a file that can be saved on
their devices. In that case, students just need to bring their electronic devices such as
smartphone, laptop or tablet. Moreover, the second most important need is to reduce
the amount of money students have to spent. By using educational apps, students will
not be under too much pressure because of the cost they have to paid in every new
term, they will just need to pay a certain amount of money every year.
[2.4.] 5.1. Abilities
For studying in traditional method, tutors will not be able to follow every students
in class so they don’t know clearly about every student’s level. Lessons arrangement
also affect a lot because they have to be get along with the abilities of each person and
also there are many new theories that students can not be able to find, that’s why
study through apps will help students access those theories related to lessons and new
theories that didn’t include in the lessons. And even after several classes, those apps
can evaluate level that is appropriate for each individuals and then give them the
compatible learning schedule. Other important features are remind students to study
everyday, some apps even have a streak reminders such as Doulingo which will
motivate students study more, plus, study applications will provide periodic tests so
that students can understand what level they are and they can self-evaluation. In
addition, these apps will also install with many languages so that students can choose
to learn in their mother tongue or different languages especially english, so that they
will have a chance to practice while studying their lessons.
[2.5.] 6. Value in use
The value in use of learning through apps is the actual value and practical benefits
that learners experience during the process of using the learning through apps,
different from the potential value, which is what learners achieve after industry have
shared some of the values and benefits it brings.
Emotional value of learning through apps refers to the feeling and emotional
benefits that learners experience while using educational benefits that learners
experience while using educational apps. It plays a crucial role because positive
emotions can boost motivation, support learning habits and make the overall
experience more meaningful.
6.1. Sense of achievements
Completing lessons, earning badges on maintaining a streak gives learners a sense
of pride and motivation to continue. It helps increase confidence.
- Seeing steady progress through scores, feedback or level advancement helps
learners believe that they are capable. Especially, for those who once feared learning
apps provide a safe encouraging environment to rebuild confidence.
6.2. Fun and excitement
- The bright visually appealing designs, entertaining animations flexible lessons
and minigames give users a sense of happiness and energy whenever they open the
apps. Building a habit out of learning, instead of a burden.
- Economic value of learning through apps refers to financial benefits and cost-
efficiency that learners and society again by using educational apps instead of
traditional learning methods. This includes both direct savings and indirect economic
advantages. Here are main points.
6.3. Lower cost of access
Most educational apps are free on affordable, especially compared to classroom-
based courses textbooks or tutoring services.
This allows a more significant number of individuals, such as those from low-
income households to access quality education.
6.4. Reduced learning expense
Students do not have to shell out to travel, lodging or physical handouts.
All learners need in term of hardware is a device and an internet connection, both
of which are increasingly widely available.
As Kukulska-Hulme (2009) point out “With these apps, learners can access an
array of language resources anytime and anywhere, such as grammar tutorials,
vocabulary exercises, pronunciation guides, and interactive language games.” (p.114).
These applications offer users high-quality learning materials integrated with
engaging graphics and gamified elements, thereby enhancing comprehension and
facilitating more effective learning.
73. Methodology.
3.1. Participants
This is a summary of the percentage data collected from 37 survey participants of
UTE providing insights into their field of study, awareness of using apps to learn
English, and their current year of study.

Finally, the survey results reveal that learning through the app has significantly
contributed to the improvement of all four essential language skills—listening,
speaking, reading, and writing—among the participants. Many respondents reported
noticeable progress in each of these areas, attributing their development to the
comprehensive and interactive nature of the app’s content. The applications offer a
wide range of tests, exercises, and real-life examples designed to engage users
actively and encourage practical application of their language abilities. These features
enable learners to practice and enhance their skills holistically, fostering greater
confidence and competence in using English across different contexts. Overall, the
findings suggest that the app serves as an effective tool for supporting balanced
language development.

4.2. Discussion
After analyzing the responses from participants, the survey revealed a consistently
positive attitude toward learning English through digital applications. All 37
respondents agreed that using English learning apps offers various benefits, such as
increased convenience, accessibility, and engagement. These features were seen as
key motivators that encourage more consistent and effective language study. The
results suggest that online learning platforms can play a valuable role in supporting
language acquisition and promoting independent learning.
