System of Linear Equations in Two Variables Graphical Method

The document outlines methods for solving linear systems, specifically through graphical representation. It includes steps for graphing lines and identifying their intersection points as solutions, along with practice exercises to determine the nature of the systems (consistent, inconsistent, or dependent). Additionally, it prompts predictions about the relationships between various linear equations.

SOLVING LINEAR SYSTEMS

A. Graphical Method (Steps)

1. Graph the two lines and identify the point where they intersect.
2. The point of intersection is the solution set.
Examples. Solve the following systems graphically.
𝑦−𝑥 =3 2𝑦 − 𝑥 = 4 2𝑦 = 4𝑥 − 4
1. { 2. { 3. {
𝑦 + 2𝑥 = −3 4𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 12 −8𝑥 + 4𝑦 = −8

PRACTICE EXERCISES

A. Solve each system graphically. Determine whether the system is consistent and independent,
inconsistent, or consistent and dependent.

2𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 4 2𝑥 − 𝑦 = 4 𝑦 =1−𝑥
1. { 2. { 3. {
𝑦−𝑥 =6 2𝑦 − 4𝑥 + 8 = 0 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 8

B. For each linear system of equations, predict whether the lines will intersect, coincide, or be parallel.

𝑦 =𝑥+2 𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 3 𝑦 = −4𝑥 + 9

1. { 2. { 3. {
𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 3 𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 7 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 5

1
𝑦 = 3𝑥 +3 2𝑥 − 4𝑦 = 4 5𝑥 − 7𝑦 = −7
4. { 1 5. { 6. { 5
𝑦= 𝑥 −3 −𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 2 = 0 𝑦 = 7𝑥 + 1
