Rudder Fact

The document outlines procedures for hydrostatic testing and maintenance of ship rudders, including inspection methods, removal procedures, and antifouling paint regulations. It details the types of antifouling paints, their application methods, and the necessary surface preparation for steel used in shipbuilding. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of achieving correct dry film thickness for coatings and provides guidelines for measuring and applying these materials.

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: Hydrostatic test of rudder

- open top (filling) plug of rudder

- fill water up to 2.45 m (from the bottom of the rudder) or summer load line whichever is higher

- 2.45 m is classification society rule (IACS guideline) (better not to say in oral)

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: Jobs on rudder in DD

- Visual inspection

- Rudder drop (trammel gauge) size of trammel gauge is 120-150 mm subjected to vsl size

- clearances

1. Upper pintle (PSFA) feeler gauge

2. Lower pintle (PSFA) feeler gauge

3. Jumping clearances (P&S) feeler gauge

- Hydrostatic test

- NDT and DT (hammer test), if required

- inner paint

- vacuum test after assembly

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: The most stressed area in the rudder is Rudder?

- palm bolts (coupling bolts) area and

- pintle joint area

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: Procedure to remove rudder

1. Hold Rudder with lifting gear (as per Yard or as appropriate)

2. Remove top pintle

3. And then remove the lower pintle

4. Reddur will be slide and remove

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: AFS convention

- earlier Organotins like Tribultyle Tin were used

- as per this convention ships build after 2003 cannot use TBT paint

- TBT was harmful for marine organisms

What are antifouling paints?

1. Biocidal route - killing the organisms ( copper and boosting biocides)

2. Non biocidal route- silicon based which makes slippery surfaces (foul released technology)
Biocidal route

- TBT free

1. Self Polishing Copolymer (SPC)

2. Controlled Depletion Polymer (CDP) - Slowly slowly layer will be depleted

- 36 months life

- it cannot prevent sea water penetration in coating

Non biocidal route

1. Silicon based - for this minimum vessel speed is required

- good mechanical properties

- this is expensive twice of SPC

So we use hybrid

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: 1. Flat bottom to light load water line - 2 layers anti corrosion
+ 2 layers of antifouling (coal tar epoxy) DRY film thickness 400 micron. Hybrid paint will be used

2. Boot top area : 2 anti corrosive+ 2 antifouling - subjected to scratches from tugs so GLADS FLAKES
EPOXY paint

3. Topside area (minimum freeboard area) : ACRYLIC paint 250 micron 2 layer of anti corrosive and 1
acrylic

4. Super structure same as 3

5. Weather deck: 1 layer of anti slip + 2 layers of anti corrosive

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: Application of paint

1. Sand blasting

2. Cleaning

3. Shop primer for temporary protection

4. Anti corrosive 2 layers

5. Anti fouling 2 layers

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: Steel supply to yard

1. From mill

2. Mill scale is there, this is purposely done to prevent oxidation of plate surface

3. Now treatment of plate

4. Pass through roller

5. Pre heating chamber

6. Pickling (to remove the mill scale)

7. Shot blasting unit (6 mm or more thick plate to be shot blast as per Swedish standards)

- Swedish SA1- BRUSH OFF- loose mill scale, loose rust and foreign particles removal

- Swedish SA2- COMMERCIAL- All above + grey metal visible

- Swedish SA2.5- NEAR WHITE METAL- cleaned surface will show varying shades of grey

- Swedish SA3- White metal visible- varying grey shades of viewing from different angles

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: - For achieving correct dry film thickness we should have
correct wet film thickness

- to measure wet film thickness we have instrument called comb gauge

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: Manufacturer of the paint will give you reduction of paint
thickness after getting dry

[12:48, 11/11/2024] +91 70432 00972: Dry film thickness

- Banana 🍌 gauge : hemispherical magnetic tip is there

- Elcometer has developed one measuring instrument that is widely used in marine industry

- we also use this instrument to measure piston ring ceramic coating
