Graphing Polynomial Functions - Lecture Notes

The document outlines the steps for finding the x- and y-intercepts of polynomial functions, which are essential for graphing. To find the x-intercept, one must factor the polynomial, set y to zero, and solve for x. For the y-intercept, simply set x to zero and simplify the expression.

GRAPHING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS

Solving for the x- and y- intercepts is an important step in

graphing a polynomial function. These intercepts are used to
determine the points where the graph intersects or touches the
x-axis and the y-axis.
To find the x-intercept of a polynomial function:

a. Factor the polynomial completely

b. Let y be equal to zero
c. Equate each factor to zero and solve for x.

To find the y-intercept:

a. Let x be equal to zero and simplify.

Determine the intercepts of the graphs of the following

polynomial functions:

y = (x + 2)(x + 3)(x + 5)
Given: _______________________
Factor completely: _______________________
Equate y to 0:
_______________________
Then equate each factor to zero and solve for x:
_______________________

𝑥= 𝑥= 𝑥=
(__ )=0 (__ )=0 (__ )=0

____ ____ ____

Let x = 0
y = (0 + 2)(0 + 3)(0 + 5)
y = _______
x-intercepts: _____________________
y-intercept: _____________________
