MAT120.

21: Assignment 1
Submission Deadline: Hard copy (handwritten or typed) due by 5 pm on July 2, 2025, under
the instructor's office door.

Cover Page Requirement: Must include your name, student ID, and section number.

Instructions: Answer all 7 questions, showing all necessary steps and justifying answers
clearly.

Topics Covered: Functions, Domain and Range, Inverse Functions, Exponential and
Logarithmic Functions, Limits, End Behaviour, Tangent Lines, and Rate of Change.

Question 1
Given \( f(x) = \frac{x^2 - 16}{x^2 - 25} \)

a. Domain: Denominator ≠ 0 ⇒ \( x ≠ ±5 \). Domain: \( (-∞, -5) ∪ (-5, 5) ∪ (5, ∞) \).

b. Vertical Asymptotes: At \( x = ±5 \) since denominator = 0 and numerator ≠ 0.

c. Explanation: Function tends to ∞ or -∞ at \( x = ±5 \) due to division by 0.

Question 2
Given \( f(x) = \sqrt{9 - x^2} \)

d. Domain: \( -3 ≤ x ≤ 3 \). Range: \( [0, 3] \).

e. Inverse: Not one-to-one over full domain. Example: \( f(1) = f(-1) = \sqrt{8} \). No inverse
unless domain is restricted.

Question 3
a. \( \lim_{x→5} \frac{x^2 - 25}{x - 5} = \lim_{x→5}(x + 5) = 10 \).

b. \( \lim_{x→∞} \frac{2x^2 + 7x}{5x^2 - 3} = \frac{2}{5} \) (dividing by highest power of

x).

Question 4
Let \( f(x) = \ln(3 - x) \).

a. Domain: \( x < 3 \), so domain = \( (-∞, 3) \).

b. Continuity: Function is continuous on its domain ⇒ \( (-∞, 3) \).

Question 5
Let \( f(x) = e^{x^2 - 2x} \), \( g(x) = \ln(x + 3) \).

a. Not inverses: Ranges and domains do not match correctly, and \( f(x) \) is not one-to-one.

b. Geometric meaning: Inverses reflect over \( y = x \). These functions are not reflections.

Question 6
Position: \( s(t) = 5t^2 - 30t + 10 \)

a. Avg rate between \( t = 2 \) and \( t = 5 \): \( 5 \) units/sec.

b. Instantaneous velocity at \( t = 3 \): \( s'(t) = 10t - 30 \) ⇒ \( s'(3) = 0 \) units/sec.

c. Interpretation: Avg shows movement over time; Inst. = 0 ⇒ momentarily stopped at \( t =

3 \).

Question 7
Let \( f(x) = x^3 + x^2 - 4x \)

a. Tangent at \( x = 2 \): Point = (2, 4), Slope = 12 ⇒ Line: \( y = 12x - 20 \).

b. At \( x = 1 \), function is concave up ⇒ Tangent lies below curve.
