Functions – Transformation SL 2.

A. Translations:
Vertical Translation: 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) + 𝑏
Horizontal Translation: 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥 − 𝑎)
B. Stretches (Dilations)
Vertical Stretch: 𝑦 = 𝑝𝑓 (𝑥 ), 𝑝 > 0
Horizontal Stretch: 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑞𝑥 ), 𝑞 > 0
C. Reflections
Reflect in the x-axis (Flip Vertically): 𝑦 = −𝑓(𝑥)
Reflect in the y-axis (Flip Horizontally): 𝑦 = 𝑓(−𝑥)
A. Translations:
Consider the Parent Function 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2
[Note: Parent Function means the simplest form of the same kind of function.]
1. Vertical Translation
Compare the graphs of 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 and 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) + 2 = 𝑥 2 + 2
Compare the graphs of 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 and 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) − 2 = 𝑥 2 − 2
2. Horizontal Translation
Compare the graphs of 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 and 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 − 2) = (𝑥 − 2)2
Compare the graphs of 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 and 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 + 2) = (𝑥 + 2)2
3. Vector form of Translations
B. Stretches
Consider Q1 of the Exercise
1. Vertical Stretch
2. Horizontal Stretch
C. Reflection
Consider the function 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 + 3
Compare the graphs of 𝑦 = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 + 3, 𝑦 = −𝑓 (𝑥 ) and 𝑦 = 𝑓 (−𝑥 )
