Review Of Rachel Simon s Riding The Bus With My Sister
Reading through Rachel Simon s Riding the Bus with My Sister, I consistently felt that Beth fit
the mold of a secondary character rather than a primary one. I initially thought I had interpreted it
this way considering I was expecting Beth to be the focal point of the text, what with the
disability based memoirs we have been reading, but my hesitation regarding such an assumption
faded as I continued reading. As the text progresses, it becomes more and more clear that Beth s
presence is meant to bolster Rachel s personal development. To my disappointment, Beth spends a
great deal of time in the margins of the narrative, losing focus during long stories and fading away
as Rachel gains various pieces of lifestyle advice. Granted, I am only a third into the memoir, but,
as far as I can tell, this pattern doesn t seem to be fading. I cannot speak for Rachel Simon s
intentions regarding this text, but, among the episodes she outlines, there are a number which may
give away her priorities. I particularly honed in on the events leading up to Beth s sterilization.

Prior to speaking with Beth directly, Rachel and her family discuss the potential of pregnancy, all the
family members present deciding that its possibility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It should be assumed that Beth was led through an in depth explanation of what sterilization could
possibly mean for her, but this isn t included in the text. Had Beth been the focal point of the book,
Rachel would have clarified what certainly could be perceived as an ethical and moral blunder. Up
until this point in the text, though, even Rachel s love life has received more attention to detail than
Beth s interactions with forms of birth control. Rachel doesn t attend to events to Beth s life in the
way she attends to events in her own, and that is one of many reasons why I m struggling to see
Beth as anything but a secondary
What Does Redemptor Hominis Mean
In John Paul II s encyclical letter, Redemptor Hominis, the pope states in his first few words that
Christ is the redeemer of man, THE REDEEMER OF MAN, Jesus Christ, is the centre of the
universe and of history. (Redemptor Hominis, 1). But what could John Paul II mean by this? We
know from the Bible that God sent JesusChrist to earth to save man from sin. In order to be saved
from sin, one must understand the truth . The truth is the way of God. The truth sets mankind free
from sin and allows them to live an eternal life through God. We see Christ as the one who brings
man freedom based on truth, frees man from what curtails, diminishes and as it were breaks off this
freedom at its root, in man s soul, his heart and his conscience. (Redemptor... Show more content on

Once man is freed from his sins and ignorance, man can learn the truth about the nature of God,
The Declaration on Religious Freedom shows us convincingly that, when Christ and, after him, his
Apostles proclaimed the truth that comes not from men but from God my teaching is not mine,
but his who sent me ,... they preserved, while acting with their full force of spirit, a deep esteem
for man, for his intellect, his will, his conscience and his freedom (Redemptor Hominis, 12). It has
been referenced that the truth has the ability to set one free, Jesus Christ meets the man of every
age, including our own, with the same words: You will know the truth, and the truth will make you
free (Redemptor Hominis, 12). True freedom is the ability to be authentically free. Authentic
freedom entails a relationship with God, Jesus sought to free people from false, material beliefs by
imparting to them a truer idea of God and our relationship to Him, offering everyone refuge in
Christ. (Bulloch, 1). However, there is also a negative aspect involved with being truly free. One
must refrain from superficial freedom. Superficial freedom cannot set one free because freedom can
only be achieved through truth, and the truth is something only God can offer. Therefore, freedom is
only available through redemption and
Poem
In both poems Before I got my eyes put out and We grow accustomed to the dark Emily Dickinson
metaphorically talks about sight and experiencing light. In both poems sight could be being open
to explore different perspectives or being willing to make changes and adjust. Thinking of things
from another point of view is like giving you a new set of eyes. Being willing to changeopens up a
brand new set of doors. While reading Before I got my eye put out by Emily DickinsonI first thought
the poem had to do with losing the sense of sight. After a couple reads, I began to understand it
more. I came to the conclusion that this poem was referring to being closed minded and not being
willing to explore and look at things from another perspective. In the first stanzaDickinson explains
the idea that she liked seeing with her normal eyes just like other creatures. Dickinson in stanza
two goes on and says But, were it old to me, Today, That I might have the sky, For mine, I tell you
that my heart would split, for the size of me. meaning that if somebody would ve told her how
interesting it was to look at things from another perspective she would. In stanza 3 Dickinson
goes on and claims different aspects of nature as her own, she feels there is no limits and
everything is hers. In stanza 4 she says So safer guess just with my soul basically saying that
because she s been only looking from her fixed mindset she feels safer doing so. When you use
another set of eyes you notice so much more and gain an appreciation of what s around you. When
you think of growing accustomed to the dark of course you think of some type of adjustment to
darkness, but Emily Dickinson s message in We grow accustomed to the dark is deeper than just
adjusting to change of light. The idea that she is trying to convey is that we adjust and adapt to
change. In the first stanza Dickinson describes how becoming accustomed to the dark is something
that happens frequently, she says ...As when the Neighbor, holds the Lamp, To witness her Goodbye
She means that even with somebody guiding holding the lamp as you begin your journey of change
eventually you are left on your own to adjust. The second stanza explains how we are
The Use Of Gothic Elements In Dracula By Bram Stoker
Vampires: How They Were Made
Most people wonder where the idea of vampires came from and how did the first one come about.
The novel, Dracula, is set and written in the nineteenth century during the Victorian era. The
Victorian people had certain beliefs about Christianity and the roles of men and women in society.
Women were allowed only to do certain things and were expected to do specific things in regards to
men. The Victorian people also had their own interpretation of superstitions. Stoker introduced the
Victorian people to gothic elements in his literary works. In literature, gothic novels often use gothic
elements to support their themes and the mood. Since Dracula is a gothic novel Stoker used the same

Therefore, the gothic element of degeneration and decay supports the theme of good versus evil
throughout the novel. Stoker also uses the atmosphere throughout the novel to establish the vampire
tradition. This gothic element is displayed in Jonathan s journey to Bistritz: As we wound on our
endless way, and the sun sank lower and lower behind us. This was emphasized by the fact that the
snowy mountain top still held the sunset, seemed to glow out with a delicate cool pink...goitre was
painfully prevalent (Stoker 8). Usually the atmosphere of the book is filled with degeneration and
decay, so both of these gothic elements play a role in making a gothic novel. These gothic elements
also establish the vampire tradition of the setting and superstition. This atmosphere concept is used
in other novels as well like the novel Moby Dick: ...its [the ship s] weather stained hull, its
venerable bows, its grotesqueness and somber picturesqueness (Magistrale 203). In this quote, Tony
Magistrale is comparing a ship at sea, the Pequod, to a haunted house on land. Magistrale s purpose
of comparing the ship to the house is to present the use of gothic elements to build up the setting for
a gothic novel. Stoker uses this concept of gothic elements, specifically the atmosphere, to establish
the vampire and gothic tradition of literature. The gothic atmosphere can set a theme for the
superstition of certain atmospheres.

The plasma cell is the end differentiated maturation of the B lymphocyte and the producer of
immunoglobulins. Multiple myeloma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic

This antibody deficiency leads to infections by encapsulated organisms such as Streptococcus

infection. While the 23 valent pneumococcal vaccine is given to these patients, there is no evidence
that it prolongs survival. Intravenous immunoglobulin infusion has been helpful in septic patients,

Battle Of Great Britain Essay
War is horrible, but slavery is worse, and you may be sure that the British people would rather go
down fighting than live in servitude. ⁷ By July 10th, 1940, Germany had overrun Europe using
Blitzkrieg method and then declared war on Great Britain. This war was the first military campaign
in history to be fought entirely in the air. Conquering all the odds, the Royal Air Forcestood alone
and defeated the German Luftwaffe. Even when facing certain defeat, Britain prevailed. The
leadership of Great Britain, radar, and the Royal Air Force without a doubt were the three most
crucial reasons into why Britain prevailed.

The leadership of Great Britain played an important role to Britain s success during the Battle of
Britain. Winston Churchill and Lord Beaverbrook were two of the most important people to thank
when it comes to Great Britain s success. Winston Churchill had a defiant attitude and stirring
speeches that inspired the nation at a time when many people thought britain faced certain defeat.¹

Radar played a big role in the Dowding system as well. It allowed the RAF to respond as fast as
possible to the incoming german attacks and use the resources of pilots and aircrafts to their full
potential. Radar also gave the Royal Air Force early warning signs on German attacks or raids. It
gave the fighters valuable time to prepare for German attacks and made sure they were not caught
alone and defenceless. Another benefit of the radar was that the RAF had more than fifty radars
stations in the south of Britain under their possession, which gave them an edge over Germany
throughout the battle. Overall, radar was very effective and it helped Great Britain have an edge
over Germany throughout the entire
The Role Of V As A Proletariat
V is an anarchist who believes that violence and destruction are necessary in order to establish a
new world order in which people can live with each other in peace, rather than being ruled by the
government. Throughout the novel, V demonstrates that he is a proletariat who is fighting for
the rights of the society. A proletariat is a term of Marx s theory and is one of the many. He first
identifies that he is a proletariat when he states, Did you think to kill me? There s no flesh or
blood within this cloak to kill. There s only an idea. Ideas are bulletproof. (Book 3: Chapter 7) (Page
236: Box 7). This statement helps prove that V is a proletariat fighting for society s rights. This is
because he is part of the working class and is carrying
Total Institutions
Total Institutions

In the year 1961, the author, Erving Goffman, published a book consisting of text and studies on
mental patients and inmates, in what he has called total institutions . There is a large focus on the
life of mental patients, due to his year long study in an American institution. However, the center of
my reading was based on the institutions and the lifestyles that are reached when placed in such
establishments. When describing these institutions the author referred to them as segregated
communities. This is exactly what they are. One is cut off from the outside society, with little or no
contact at all until the inmates stay is over. The character of these institutions is one that is an

such as, jails, juvenile holdings, and penitentiaries. Again, these are a group of establishments that
have the ability to strip people of their identity for as long as they are a member of this segregated

usually a warden, sheriff or other member of the staff. Ones self is stripped and one is thrown

Tropical Rainforest Research Paper
There are several world changing events happening right now. However, many of these events are
either forgotten or rarely discussed. One of these forgotten events is the deforestation of the
rainforests. Rainforest deforestation primarily started in the 1970 s, but has since increased. Up until
recently, deforestation of rainforests was seldom talked about despite how much it has affected the
world. Rainforestdeforestation needs more attention because it has occurred for many decades
despite the environmental damage, the rainforest is important for the economy, food, and medicinal

Double Standards In Jane Martin s Beauty
Double Standard (Working Title) Beauty a small word containing only six letters, but one that
beholds the power of substantial external and internal impacts. Beauty is it strictly an outward
appearance, a frame of mind, or is it in the eye of the beholder? Maybe a combination of these
three philosophies, but a person in complete possession of outward comeliness, but mentally
believes it to be a curse will only manifest ongoing reality disconnects as the character Carla
experiences in Jane Martin s drama titled Beauty. To be gifted with beauty or with brains: which is
the greater endowment? Brains the intellectual fortitude, which if employed and utilized will lead to
advancements in life. What if being astute was not viewed as a quality attribute, or had little to no
value to the person in possession of this distinguished quality? What if a person wished to be

Personal response I thought this article was helpful and fun to read. Some of these techniques in
