MCA - I Semester Regular & Supplementary Examinations, March -2024
Probability and Statistical Applications
(20MC1T05)

Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70

(Answer all questions - 5 X 14 = 70 marks)

1 a) A businessman goes to hotels X, Y, Z, 20%, 50%, 30% of the time K3 7M
respectively. It is known that 5%, 4%, 8% of the rooms in X, Y, Z
hotels have faulty plumbing’s. Obtain the probability that
businessman’s room having faulty plumbing is assigned to hotel X?

b) The contents of urns I, II and III are as follows: 1white, 2 black and 3
red balls, 2white, 1 black, and 1 red balls, and 4 white, 5 black and 3 red K3 7M
balls. One urn is chosen at random and two balls drawn. They happen to
be white and red. Determine the probability that they come from urns I,
II or III?
(OR)
2 a) A box contains 6 red, 4 white and 5 black alls. A person draws 4 balls K3 7M
from the box at random. Determine the probability that among the balls
drawn there is at least one ball of each colour.

b) Two marbles are drawn in succession from a box containing 10 red, 30 K3 7M

white, 20 blue and 15 orange marbles, with replacement being made
after each draw. Obtain the probability that (i) both are white (ii) first is
red and second is white.

3 a) The probability function of a random variable X is K3 7M

x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
P(x k 3 5k 7k 9k 11k 13k
) k
(i) Determine P(X<4), P(X≥5), P(3<X≤6)
What will be the minimum value of k so that P(X≤k)>0.3?
b) A continuous random variable X has a p.d.f K3 7M

{
2
f ( x )= 3 x , 0 ≤ x ≤ 1
0 , otherwise
Determine a and b such that P(X ≤ a) = P(X>a) and (ii) P(X > b) = 0.05

(OR)
4 a) A car hire firm has two cards which it fires out day by day. The number K3 7M
of demands for a car on each day is distributed as Poison variate with
mean 1.5. Calculate the proportion of days on which (i) neither car is
used, and (ii) some demand is refused.

b) What are the Chief Characteristics (properties) of the Normal

distribution. K2 7M

5 A population consists of five numbers 2, 3, 6, 8 and 11. Consider all

possible samples of size two which can be drawn with replacement form
this population. Determine (i) the mean of the population (ii) the standard K3 14M
deviation of population (iii) the mean of the sampling distribution of means
and (iv) the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of means.
(OR)
6 a) Let the random variable X assume the value ‘r’ with the probability law: K3 7M
P(X=r) = p qr-1; r = 1,2,3,…. Determine the MGF of X and hence its
mean and variance.
b) Obtain the moment generating function of the
random variable X having probability density function f(x) = K3 7M

{
x , if 0 ≤ x ≤1
2−x ,if 1≤ x ≤ 3
0 , elsewhere
7 a) A researcher wants to know the intelligence of students in a school. K4 7M
He selected two groups of students. In the first group there 150
students having mean IQ of 75 with a S.D of 15 in the second
group there are 250 students having mean IQ of 70 with S.D of 20.
Test the hypothesis that at 5% level of significance the two groups
of students have same IQ levels or not.

b) A wholesaler in apples claims that only 4% of the apples supplied K4 7M

by him are defective. A random sample of 600 apples contained 36
defective apples. Test the claim of the wholesaler.

(OR)
8 a) To examine the hypothesis that the husbands are more intelligent than K3 7M
wives, an investigator took a sample of 6 couples and administered them a
test which measure the I.Q. The results are as follows:
Husbands 11 105 97 105 123 109
7
Wives 10 98 87 104 116 95 Examine the
6 hypothesis
with a reasonable test at the level of significance of 0.05.
b) 1000 students at college level were graded according to their I.Q and the K3 7M
economic conditions of their homes. Use Chi-square test to examine
whether there is any association between economic conditions at home
and I.Q.
