Relations Functions Types

The document outlines the learning objectives for a General Mathematics course focusing on functions, including definitions, types, and applications. It introduces the concept of relations and functions, differentiating between them, and provides examples of various types of functions such as constant, polynomial, and exponential functions. Additionally, it includes a practical scenario involving a student's study habits and their impact on math grades.

GENERAL

MATHEMATICS
FIRST SEMESTER
REVIEW OF FUNCTIONS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Define relations and functions.
2. Determine the type of a given
function.
3. Develop interest in exploring
various types of functions and their
applications.
JUMPING BOARD
Juan, a Grade 11 student, was looking
back at his Junior High School math
grades. He noticed something
interesting: whenever he consistently
studied math at home for at least 30
minutes a day, his average grade would
improve by 2 points.
JUMPING BOARD
On the other hand, if he didn't study at
home, his math average would be
around 78.
Curious about how much his grades
could improve, Juan wondered what his
average would be if he studied for 60,
90, or even 120 minutes a day.
DEFINING RELATIONS
AND FUNCTIONS:
A RELATION is any set of ordered
pairs. The set of all first elements of
the ordered pairs is called the domain
of the relation, and the set of all
second elements is called the range.
DEFINING RELATIONS
AND FUNCTIONS:
A FUNCTION is a relation or rule of
correspondence between two elements
(domain and range) such that each
element in the domain corresponds to
exactly one element in the range.
