LESSON 1.1 Activity BioDetectives. Cracking The Code of Life

The document outlines a lesson plan for high school students to explore unifying themes in biology through a hands-on activity. Students will work in pairs to identify themes related to various biological scenarios and justify their choices. The lesson includes a rubric for assessing theme identification, reasoning, effort, and organization.

LESSON 1.1 Unifying Themes

BioDetectives: Cracking the Code of Life

Objective: Students will explore and identify the unifying themes of biology (e.g., structure and function,
evolution, energy and life, homeostasis, information flow, interdependence, etc.) through a hands-on and
discussion-based challenge.

General Instructions:
• Look for a DUO partner. Then, think of a DUO NAME. (Example: RAWI, CHARES, AZBER, BREKA)
• Read each scenario carefully.
• Identify the correct unifying theme it represents.
• Briefly explain why you chose that theme using 1–2 sentences.
• This will be used as your reference when you move to group discussion later. Be thoughtful and accurate!
• Each statement below represents a situation connected to one of the five unifying themes of biology:
1 New Properties Emerge at Successive Levels of Biological Organization
2 Life’s Processes Involve the Expression and Transmission of Genetic Information
3 Life Requires the Transfer and Transformation of Energy and Matter
4 From Molecules to Ecosystems, Interactions Are Important in Biological Systems
5 Evolution Accounts for the Unity and Diversity of Life
• Hint: Look for keywords like structure, energy, DNA, evolution, interaction, and inheritance.

1. The heart is composed of muscle
tissue, blood vessels, and nerve cells
working together to pump blood.
2. A child inherits their eye color and
blood type from their biological parents.
3.During photosynthesis, plants convert
sunlight into chemical energy stored in
glucose.
4. Bees pollinate flowers while
collecting nectar, benefiting both
species.
5. Bacteria in the gut help digest food,
while they benefit from a stable
environment.
6. Birds have different beak shapes
depending on the type of food available
in their environment.
7. The human body is made up of
organs, each performing specialized
functions that contribute to the whole.
8. The sequence of DNA bases
determines the structure of proteins in
cells.
9. Organisms use cellular respiration to
break down food molecules and release
energy.
10. Plants grow toward light sources
due to hormone responses triggered by
environmental stimuli.

11. Fossils show transitional forms

between ancient and modern species,
supporting common ancestry.
12. Muscle tissues coordinate with
skeletal systems to enable movement.
13. Identical twins share the same
genetic makeup but may still have
different fingerprints.
14. The food chain transfers energy
from producers to consumers to
decomposers.
15. Different species of finches in the
Galápagos Islands have evolved
distinct beak types.
16. The brain integrates information
from different senses to produce
coordinated actions.
17. RNA carries instructions from DNA
to the ribosomes to build proteins.
18. Predator and prey populations
influence each other’s size and survival
19. All living organisms—from bacteria
to humans—use ATP as an energy
currency.
20. Similar bone structures in whales,
bats, and humans suggest a common
evolutionary ancestor
