SAT Comma Practice Worksheet

(Advanced Version)
Part 1: Add the Commas (20 Questions – 15 mins)
Insert commas where necessary. Each sentence may need one or more commas, or none at
all.

1. Before the sun rose we packed our bags and left.

2. James who is my cousin will be joining us later.

3. The book that I borrowed from the library was excellent.

4. We visited Paris France Rome and Madrid during the summer.

5. The long winding road stretched ahead of us.

6. “I didn’t expect that” she said with a smile.

7. My brother who lives in Chicago is visiting next week.

8. She bought apples bananas and oranges.

9. Although he was tired he finished his homework.

10. You can go with John or you can wait here.

11. On the top of the hill we had a great view.

12. The movie was funny clever and thought-provoking.

13. I spoke with the man who owns the bakery.

14. She opened the door walked in and sat down.

15. I met Taylor Swift the singer at the concert.

16. That dress in my opinion is too expensive.

17. My friend and her sister are both musicians.

18. We should leave now or we’ll miss the train.

19. He said “This isn’t what I expected.”

20. If you want we can leave after lunch.


Part 2: Spot and Correct the Error (20 Questions – 15 mins)
Each sentence contains one comma error. Identify and correct the mistake.

1. The rain stopped, and then started again.

2. I like hiking, and biking.

3. My dog, that barks at night, finally calmed down.

4. We drove to Phoenix, Arizona, and spent two days there.

5. I bought the small, blue car that was on sale.

6. They moved to Austin, Texas last year.

7. He is an expert in photography, and graphic design.

8. Mary, and James helped me set up the tent.

9. She said, “let’s go to the beach.”

10. The bike that I just bought, is already broken.

11. He wants to visit New York, and see Times Square.

12. We walked around the museum, and admired the artwork.

13. I enjoy learning languages, and reading novels.

14. Susan who speaks three languages works as a translator.

15. The movie ended, while we were still buying snacks.

16. The car that I rented, had no air conditioning.

17. I have read that book, and found it interesting.

18. Neither my mom, nor my dad could attend.

19. After the show, I met the cast, and took photos.

20. My teacher, gave me some extra practice sheets.


Answer Key with Explanations
Part 1 Sample Answers:

 1. Before the sun rose, we packed our bags and left. (Introductory phrase)
 2. James, who is my cousin, will be joining us later. (Nonessential clause)
 3. Correct as is. (Essential clause with 'that')
 4. We visited Paris, France, Rome, and Madrid during the summer. (Items in a list,
geographical name)
 5. The long, winding road stretched ahead of us. (Coordinate adjectives)

Part 2 Sample Answers:

 1. The rain stopped and then started again. ('And then started again' is not an
independent clause)
 2. I like hiking and biking. (No comma between two items)
 3. My dog that barks at night finally calmed down. ('That' clause is essential, no
commas)
 4. We drove to Phoenix, Arizona and spent two days there. (No comma before 'and'
when second clause is not independent)
 5. Correct as is. (Coordinate adjectives correctly separated)
