INTERVENTION MATERIAL
LESSON: FOSSIL RECORD (EVIDENCES OF
EVOLUTION)
KEY CONCEPT:
EVIDENCE FROM FOSSIL RECORDS
Fossils are preserved remains of an organism. Most fossils form when the whole or
part of the organism is buried in sedimentary rocks (mud or silt). The most common
fossils are bones, shells, seeds, and pollen grains. They are often incomplete because
only the hard parts of an organism, such as bones or teeth, become fossils. The soft
tissues either decay or are eaten away. Layers of sedimentary rocks provide the most
important evidence of evolution.
Dinosaur fossils have been found on all seven continents. All non-avian
dinosaurs went extinct about 66 million years ago. There are roughly 700 known
species of extinct dinosaurs. Modern birds are a kind of dinosaur because they
share a common ancestor with non-avian dinosaurs.
ACTIVITY:
Write TRUE if the statement is CORRECT and FALSE if it is NOT.
___________1. Fossils are important evidence of evolution.
___________2. Fossils are found in Sedimentary rocks.
___________3. Fossil records of dinosaurs are not real.
___________4. “Age of Reptiles” are also known as Cenozoic Era.
___________5. Archaeologists the history of life as revealed through
the study of plant and animal fossils.
