original number by 18. Find the original number.
10) Solve for x and y:

11) Solve: 99x + 101y = 499

101x + 99y = 501
12) The sum of the numerator and denominator of a fraction
is 12. If 1 is added to both the numerator and the
denominator the fraction becomes 3/4. Find the fraction.
13) A man travels 600 km partly by train and partly by car. It
takes 8 hours and 40 minutes if he travels 320 km by train
and the rest by car. It would take 30 minutes more if he
travels 200 km by train and the rest by car. Find the speed
of the train and the car separately.
14) For what value of k will the following pair of linear
equations have no solution?
2x + 3y = 9;
6x + (k – 2)y = (3k – 2).
15) Solve the following pair of equations

16) The area of a rectangle gets reduced by 9 square units if

its length is
reduced by 5 units and the breadth is increased by 3 units.
If we increasethe length by 3 units and breadth by 2 units,
the area is increased by 67square units. Find the length
and breadth of the rectangle.
17) A boat goes 30 km upstream and 44 km downstream in
10 hours. In 13hours it can go 40 km upstream and 55 km
downstream. Determine thespeed of the stream and that of
the boat in still water?.
18) Solve the following system of equations.
19) Solve by elimination:

3x – y – 7
2x + 5y + 1 = 0

20) If 2x + y = 23 and 4x - y = 19, find the value of (5y - 2x)

and (y/x - 2).

CHAPTER 4- QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

third of their
2)

father’s age. One son is 2 years older than the other and sum
of their present age is 14 years less than the father’s
present age. Find the present ages of the father and the two
sons.
