Genmath Week 1

The document outlines the fundamentals of functions in general mathematics, including definitions of domain and range, the vertical line test for identifying functions, and the concept of piecewise functions. It also provides guidelines for evaluating functions and performing operations on rational expressions, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Additionally, it introduces the concept of composite functions and their representation in real-life scenarios.

GENERAL MATHEMATICS

HS GEN MATH 001 | A.Y 2025-2026 | 1st Semester

Examples:
Lesson 1 : Functions 1. (1,3), (2,4), (3,5)
2. (3,3), (4,3), (3,2)

RELATION
NOT AN EXAMPLE: (1,3), (2,5), (1,5) — not a function because one
domain (1) is paired with two ranges (3 & 5)
★ Rule that relates values from a set of values called domain
to a second set of values called range.
VERTICAL LINE TEST

Domain Range ★ Also known as VLT or Pencil test on a specific graph

★ If any vertical line passes through more than one point of
★ Set of x-values ★ Y-values (functional
the graph, then the relation is not a function.
★ Represented as input values
of the function ★ Output of the function

Piecewise Functions

★ Defined not only by a single equation, but by two or more

★ Each equation is valid for some interval

| HOW TO READ A PIECEWISE FUNCTION?

Function

★ A relation in which
each element of the
domain is paired with
SUB FUNCTIONS
exactly one element of the
range.
★ Only one output ★ Functions within a piecewise function
(y) with each input (x) ★ Defined by the interval of the domain
Interval: shows what sub function will be used on a piecewise
function depending on its domains interval

Evaluation of Functions

Ordered Pair ★ Replacing the variable in the function

★ Composition of the x coordinate (domain) & y coordinate | HOW TO EVALUATE A FUNCTION

(range) 1. Identify the function & domain given
★ Two values written in a fixed order within parentheses 2. Substitute the given domain to the variable given in the
function
3. Apply operations needed to simplify the given function

Note: always rely on GEMDAS when simplifying final answer

Operations on Functions (Tips & Rules in Applying 4 Basic

Operation on a Rational Expression)

Addition & ★ Find the least common

Subtraction denominator (LCD) of both
fractions. Rewrite the fractions as
equivalent fractions with the same
LCD.
★ LCD - denominator of the resulting
fraction, the sum / difference of the
numerators is the numerator of the
resulting fraction.

Multiplication ★ Rewrite the numerator &

denominator in terms of its prime
factors
★ Common factors in the numerator
and denominator can be simplified
as “1” (often called cancelling)
★ Multiply the numerators together to
get the new numerator
COMPOSITE FUNCTION
★ Multiply the denominators together
to get new denominator
★ Denoted by (f o g) is defined by (f o g) (x) - f (g(x)).
★ Function composition refers to a process of obtaining a
Division ★ Divide 2 fractions or rational
composite function
expressions, multiply the dividend
with the reciprocal of the divisor
