MAT 1120 Introduction to Mathematics and Statistics

Tutorial sheet 5 March 2021

1. Find the remainder when

(a) 5 + 6x + 7x2 – x3 is divided by x + 2

(b) 6x3 + 7x2 – 15x + 4 is divided by x – 1
(c) x4 – 3x3 + 2x2 + 5 is divided by x – 1
(d) 8x3 – 10x2 + 7x + 3 is divided by 2x – 1
(e) 9x3 + 4 is divided by 3x + 2
2. Factorize the following polynomials

(a) 6x3 – 5x2 – 17x + 6

(b) 2x4 + 7x3 – 17x2 – 7x + 15
(c) 6x4 + 31x3 + 57x2 + 44x + 12
3. By using Synthetic Division, find the quotient and remainder when

(a) x4 – 2x3 – 3x2 – 4x – 8 is divided by (i) x – 2 (ii) x + 1

(b) x3 + 3x2 – 2x – 5 is divided by (i) x + 2 (ii) x - 3
4. Show that x + y is a factor of x5 + y5 and x7 + y7. By using synthetic
division, find the quotient in each case.

5. Factorize the polynomial x3 – 3x2 + 4x + 12. Hence calculate the ranges of values
of x for which x3 – 3x2  - 4x – 12 .

6. Factorize the expression 6x3 – 7x2 – x + 12. Hence calculate the ranges of values
of x for which 6x3 – 7x2 > 12 – x .
7. Given that ( x + 2 ) is a factor of 2x3 + 6x2 + 6x – 5, find the remainder when
the expression is divided by ( 2x – 1 ) .

8. The expression 3x3 + 2x2 – bx + a is divisible by ( x – 1 ) but leaves a
remainder of 10 when divided by ( x + 1 ). Find the values of a and b.

9. The expression 6x3 – 23x2 + ax + b gives a remainder of 11 when divided by

( x – 3 ) and a remainder of – 21 when divided by ( x + 1 ). Find the values of
a and b and hence factorize the expression.

10. Find the coordinates of the points where the curve y = x3 + 6x2 + 11x + 6 cuts
(a) the y – axis (b) the x – axis. Hence make a sketch of the curve and
state the ranges of values x for which x3 + 6x2 + 11x + 6  0.

Hence, sketch the curve y = 2x3 – 5x2 – 4x + 12 and state the range of values x
can take for 2x3 – 5x2 – 4x + 12 > 0.

11. Solve the following equations.

(a) 2x  5  4 (b) 3x  1  1  x

(c) 8x  7  x  0 (d) 4x  5  8x  1

(e) 11  x  x6  3 (f) 2x  7x  3

12. Solve the following equations for x .

(a) x4 – 11x2 + 28 = 0 (b) x– 4 – 8x – 2 + 15 = 0

(c) x6 + 7x3 – 8 = 0 (d) x⅔ + 2x⅓ – 8 = 0
(e) x + x½ = 20 (f) 3 (x + 3 ) + x3 = 2
