Mini Lesson Script

This mini lesson for Grade 7 students focuses on species extinction and adaptation, explaining how some species fail to survive due to rapid environmental changes. It highlights the concept of adaptation, the failure to adapt, and the impact of human activities on extinction rates. The lesson concludes with a quick check for understanding and a transition to an activity where students will identify extinct species and relate them to modern extinction threats.

Mini Lesson Script: Species Extinction and Environmental Changes

Grade Level: Grade 7

Subject: Science
Duration: 7 minutes
Topic: Species Extinction and Adaptation

[1. Introduction – 1 minute]

"Good day, class! Today, we are going to explore an important topic: species
extinction and why some species fail to survive when there are sudden
changes in their environment. Have you ever wondered why certain animals,
like the dodo bird or the woolly mammoth, no longer exist today? (Pause for
responses)
These animals went extinct because they couldn't adapt to environmental
changes quickly enough. Let's take a closer look at why that happens and
how it’s connected to adaptation."

[2. Key Concepts – 4 minutes]

"Every species on Earth has certain traits and characteristics that allow it to
survive in its natural environment. This is called adaptation. However, not all
species can adapt to rapid or extreme environmental changes. When these
changes happen too quickly—like a sudden shift in temperature, habitat
destruction, or the introduction of a new predator—some species might not
be able to keep up, leading to their extinction."

Adaptation and Survival

"Adaptation is a process that happens over many generations. For example,
animals may develop physical traits or behaviors that help them survive in
their specific habitat. Over time, animals that are better adapted to their
environment are more likely to survive and reproduce. However, when there
are abrupt environmental changes—like climate change, deforestation, or
pollution—these adaptations may no longer be enough to ensure survival."
Failure to Adapt
"When species cannot adapt fast enough to these rapid changes, their
population numbers drop, and they may eventually go extinct. For example,
many species of frogs have become endangered or extinct due to habitat
loss caused by pollution and deforestation, which they could not adapt to
quickly enough. Similarly, species like the polar bear are struggling as global
temperatures rise because they rely on sea ice for hunting and shelter, which
is melting too fast for them to adapt."

Extinction and Environmental Changes

"In the past, extinctions have happened due to natural changes in the Earth’s
environment, like volcanic eruptions or ice ages. But today, the biggest threats
to species are caused by human activities—such as pollution, overhunting,
and climate change. These changes often happen very quickly compared to
the slow pace at which species can evolve."

[3. Quick Check – 1 minute]

"Let’s check for understanding. I’ll ask a few questions:

1. What does adaptation mean for a species?

2. Can species adapt to sudden environmental changes quickly? Why or
why not?
3. Why do species like polar bears struggle with climate change?"

[4. Transition to Activity – 1 minute]

"Now that we’ve discussed how species adapt and how environmental
changes can lead to extinction, let’s apply what you’ve learned! On your
activity sheet, you’ll identify examples of species that went extinct due to
failure to adapt and describe how environmental changes contributed to
their extinction. You will also compare this to modern species facing extinction
today."
