Story Elements for Kids

Part 4: What is a Plot?
0:07
Stories have different parts called story elements. They are… Characters, Plot,
0:13
Setting, Conflict, Resolution, and Theme. Today we will take a closer look at, Plot.
0:21
A plot is a sequence of events that describes what happens in a story and why it happens.
0:27
It combines story elements such as characters, setting, theme, and other
0:32
details to give stories a sense of direction while explaining how each event leads to another.
0:40
There are six main parts within a plot. You can think of the plot as a story mountain that
0:47
follows the order of Exposition, Conflict, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution.
0:58
When you separate the parts of this mountain, you can see the beginning, middle, and end of a
story.
1:06
Understanding the plot of a story can help you understand the events that happen within a
story!
1:13
Let’s take a closer look at each part separately…
1:17
The first part of the story mMountain is the Exposition. This is the background information
1:23
about the characters and setting which are explained at the beginning of the story.
1:29
The second part of the story mountain is the Conflict.
1:33
This is the dramatic struggle between two forces within a story.
1:38
These forces can be two characters or two groups of people.
1:43
A common conflict in stories is between good and evil.
1:48
We will learn more about conflict in the next video.

1:57
The third part of the story mountain is the Rising Action.
2:01
This is when all the events of the story come together as we reach the climax.
2:06
The rising action pushes the story along while building suspense to keep readers interested
2:12
in the story. An example of Rising Action could be a character on a journey to solve a mystery.
2:20
The fourth part of the story mountain is the Climax. This is when all the events
2:26
of the story come together so that the conflict of the plot is resolved.
2:31
This is usually the most intense part of the story.
2:34
You can think of it as a grand finale or showdown!
2:40
The fifth part of the story mountain is the Falling Action. This happens immediately
2:46
after the climax of a story and is where a story begins to shift to the resolution.
2:52
For characters, this is when they start to reach the end of their journey.
2:57
The sixth and final part of the story mountain is the Resolution.
3:02
This is the final act where the conflict is resolved.
3:06
An example of a resolution could be a hero capturing the bad guy at the end.
3:12
We will learn more about conflict in another video.
3:16

3:21
Now, let’s look at an example of plot by examining a narrative called,
3:26
Mr. Awesome and the Icy Disaster.
3:30
The story begins with the Exposition in the city of Megacropolis,
3:35
where we are introduced to the characters Larry (Dr. Ice) and Steve (Mr. Awesome).
3:43
The Conflict is when Dr. Ice freezes a woman on the elevator.
3:48
The Rising Action is when a man alerts Mr. Awesome of
3:52
Dr. Ice’s evil plans to take over Megacropolis with an ice rocket.
3:58
The Climax occurs when Mr. Awesome and Dr. Ice face off at the top of Megacropolis Tower.
4:06
The Falling Action is when Mr. Awesome destroys the ice rocket and foils Dr. Ice’s evil plans.
4:14
Lastly, the Resolution is when he captures Dr. Ice and saves the city of Megacropolis.
