calculations.

SECTION A
Answer all questions.
Question 1
(A) Choose the correct alternative (i), (ii), (iii) or (iv) for each of the questions [5x1]
given below:

(a) Two cars of masses m and M move in circles of radii r1 and r2 with speeds such
that they complete one revolution in same time. The ratio of their angular speeds is
(i) mr2 : Mr1
(ii) r12 : r22
(iii) 1:1
(iv) mr1 : Mr2

(b) A circular disc is rolling on its edge without slipping on a straight horizontal path.
The ratio of its rotational kinetic energy to its translational kinetic energy will be
(i) 1:9
(ii) 1:2
(iii) 1:4
(iv) 1:1

(c) A solid sphere is rotating freely about its axis of symmetry. The radius of it is
increased now keeping the mass same. Which of the quantities is unchanged?
(i) Moment of inertia
(ii) Angular velocity
(iii) Angular momentum
(iv) Rotational kinetic energy

(d) When a block of mass M gets suspended by a wire of length L, the new length of
the wire is (L+l) . The elastic potential energy in the extended wire will be
(i) MgL
(ii) 1/2Mgl
(iii) 1/2MgL
(iv) Mgl

(e) What will be the value of Young’s modulus of elasticity for a perfectly rigid body?
(i) zero
(ii) unity
(iii) anything of the order of 1011
(iv) infinite

(B) Answer the following questions briefly and to the point: [5x1]
a. Where will the centre of mass of a two particle system m and M(m<M) lie?
b. What is the physical significance of moment of inertia?
c. Find out the moment of inertia of a disc about an axis passing through its edge and
normal to the plane of the disc.
d. The length of a wire is cut to half. What will be the effect on maximum load it can
bear?
e. Which of the three states of matter show larger volume strain when compressed
under the same pressure?

SECTION B
Answer all questions
Question 2 [2]
The figure below shows a two particle system. Locate the co-ordinates of the centre of
mass of the system.

Question 3 [2]
The bob (mass m) of a simple pendulum of length L is displaced from its mean position
by 90° and then released. Calculate the tension in the thread.

Question 4 [2]
Explain why roads and railway tracks are deliberately banked at the turns.

Question 5 [2]
The driver of a car travelling with a velocity v sees a wall at a distance d in front of
him. Explain with reason whether he should apply brakes or take a circular turn to
avoid crashing into the wall keeping in mind the force to be applied.

Question 6 [2]
A rod of length l hinged at the bottom is allowed to fall after being held vertically. Find
the linear velocity of its top when it hits the floor.

Question 7 [3]
A solid cylinder rolls up an inclined plane of angle of inclination 30°. It has a speed of
5m/s at the bottom of the plane. Find how far the cylinder goes up the plane and the
retardation produced along the incline. (g = 10m/s2).

Question 8 [3]
The average depth of an ocean is 3km. Compute the fractional compression of water at
the bottom of the ocean. Bulk modulus of water is 22 x 108 N/m2 , ρ = 103 kg/m3 and the
value of g =10m/s2.

Question 9 [3]
Draw a stress versus strain graph and indicate yield point, plastic range and breaking
stress on it. How are ductile and brittle materials identified from the graph?

Question 10 [3]
Prove that rate of change of angular momentum is numerically equal to the external
torque. A metal disc is melted and recast in the form of a solid sphere. Justify how
moment of inertia gets affected.

Question 11 [3]
Two wires X and Y are of equal thickness and of the same material but length of X is
twice that of Y. For a given load find out which of the wires undergo (i) greater strain
and (ii) greater extension.

Question 12 [5]
Derive the relation θ = ω0 t+½ αt2 where the symbols have their usual meaning, On
pressing the accelerator of a car the wheel of a car started to make 4500 rotations per
minute from 1200 rotation per minute. Find the angular displacement (in terms of π)
after 10s.
