EEB317 TEST 2: 7TH November 2016

ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS IN DETAILS.

1. Given the following FM wave signal 𝑥(𝑡) = 12sin⁡(6𝑥108 𝑡 + 5𝑠𝑖𝑛1250𝑡)

Answer the following question:
Find the:
(a) carrier frequency [3]
Solution:
𝜔𝑐 = 2𝜋𝑓𝑐 = 6𝑥108 rad
𝜔
𝑓𝑐 = 2𝜋𝑐 = 95.492𝑥𝜋106 Hz

(b) modulating frequency [3]

Solution
𝜔 1250
𝑓𝑚 = 2𝜋𝑚 = 2𝜋 = 198.944 Hz

(c) modulating index [3]

Solution:
Modulating index = Phase Deviation= Deviation ratio

Max[5sin(1250t)] = 5(1) = 5
∆𝑓 ∆𝑓 994.718
𝛽= = 𝑓 = 198.944 = 4.999
𝐵 𝑚

(d) maximum deviation [3]

Solution:
Frequency deviation
First find instantaneous frequency deviation
𝑑𝜃(𝑡)
𝜔𝑖 = 𝑑𝑡 = 𝜔𝑐 + 5𝑥1250 cos(1250𝑡) = 𝜔𝑐 + 6,250cos⁡(1250𝑡)
Maximum carrier deviation ∆𝜔 = 6,250 rads
∆𝜔 6250
∆𝑓 = 2𝜋 = 2𝜋 = 994.198 Hz

(e) power (in watts) dissipated in a 10  resistor. [3]

Solution:
𝐴2 122
𝑃= = = 7.2 W
2𝑅 2𝑥10

2. What is the bandwidth required for an FM signal in which the modulating frequency
is 2 KHz and the maximum deviation is 10 KHz? [5]
Solution:
𝐵 = 𝑓𝑚 = 2 kHz; ∆𝑓 = 10⁡kHz
𝐵𝐸𝑀 = 2(∆𝑓 + 𝐵) = 2(2 + 10) = 24 kHz
3. Given 𝜇 = 0.3,⁡ for the AM wave for tone modulation determine:

a) Power efficiency and [5]

SOLUTION
𝜇2 0.32
𝜂= 100% = 100% = 4.3%
2 + 𝜇2 2 + 0.32
b) The percentage of the total power carried by the sidebands. [5]

Only 4.3% of the total power is in the sidebands that contain the message
signal.
