1. A balanced 4-sided dice is to be rolled one time.
(8pt) Let random variable X denote the face that lands up.
Random variable X has the following probability distribution:

x 1 2 3 4
𝑝𝑋 (𝑥) .25 .25 .25 .25

This random variable, X, is known as a Discrete Uniform random variable defined on the
integers 1through 4.

Determine each of the following:

a. E(X). Note: E(X) is also known as the Mean, 𝜇𝑋 .
b. E(X2).
c. 𝜎𝑋2 (the Variance of X).
d. 𝜎𝑋 (the Standard Deviation of X). Round to 3 decimals.

For each of the following define Y as follows:

𝑋 − 𝜇𝑋
𝑌=
𝜎𝑋

e. Construct the Probability distribution of Y.

y
𝑝𝑌 (𝑦)

f. Calculate E(Y).
g. Calculate 𝜎𝑌2 .
2. X is a random variable with PMF:
(4pt)
𝑘(6 − 𝑥)2 ; 𝑥 = 1,2,3,4,5
𝑝𝑋 (𝑥) = {
0 ; 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒

a. Find 𝑘.
b. Calculate 𝑃(𝑋 ≥ 3).
c. Calculate the mean of X, 𝜇𝑋 .
d. Calculate 𝑃(|𝑋 − 𝜇𝑋 | > 1). Note: |*| represents the Absolute Value of *.

3. A random variable X has a cumulative distribution function denoted by F(x), graphed

(4pt) below.

Answer the following based on the above plot.

a. Find the value of F(4).
b. Find the value of 𝑃(𝑋 ≤ 4).
c. Find the value of 𝑃(𝑋 < 4).
d. Find the value of 𝑃(𝑋 = 4).

4. The probability that a semiconductor wafer contains “contaminating particles” is 0.02.

(4pt) Furthermore, the wafers are independent (the chances of one wafer having contaminating
particles is not affected by any other wafers). These semiconductor wafers are to be
selected one-by-one and checked for contamination.

Determine each of the following probabilities. Please keep at least 3 decimal places.

a. Find the probability that the 5th wafer selected is the first to contain
“contaminating particles”.
b. Find the probability that the 1st contaminated wafer is found within the first seven
wafers selected.
c. Find the probability that more than 3 wafers need to be analyzed in order to detect
1st contaminated wafer.
