Class Test 4
23 August 2019
Time: 45 minutes Marks available: 28
Full marks: 25
1) You sat on a rotating stool during the whiteboard tutorial this week. Explain why you rotated
faster when you brought your hands closer to your body, using a physics principle and relevant
equations. [5]
2) Bugs does an experiment in which he accelerates a turntable from rest by exerting a constant
torque τ on the turntable. He then measures the angular velocity ω of the turntable at different
times, and plots a graph of ω versus t, obtaining a straight-line graph. Bugs uses LinearFit to
find the uncertainties u(m) and u(c) for the graph. Bugs also measures the mass, M ± u(M), and
radius, R ± u(R), of the turntable. Then Bugs asks you to help him with the analysis.
a) Find the theoretical equation for Bug’s graph in terms of the relevant physical quantities
mentioned above. (Hint: Start with Newton II for rotational motion.) (4)
b) Use dimensional analysis to check your answer to (a). (2)
c) Give the equations that Bugs should use to find τ and u(τ) from the gradient of the graph.

d) For bonus marks, find the magnitude of the total acceleration (in m s-2) of the ladybird at
t = 12.5 s, if the ladybird is situated 5.00 cm from the centre of the turntable. (3)
