Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio settled for the silver medal in the ASBC
Women's Boxing Championship after losing via split decision to Thailand's
Peamwilai Laopeam on Thursday in Wulanchabu, China.
Two judges from Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan scored three rounds in favor of the
Thai fighter, 39-37, while the Chinese judge gave a similar score in favor of
Petecio.
Petecio, who won a silver medal in the Southeast Asian Games, fought half-
blind in starting the third round after getting hit by an elbow as Laopeam threw
and missed a left hook.
"Naramdaman ko talaga ang lakas ng tama nung siko at ilang segundo rin
akong hindi makakita sa kanang mata ko," she said.
The southpaw landed power punches and combinations in the first two
rounds, but she was forced to adjust to an orthodox stance midway due to the
poor vision in her right eye.
"I really felt Nesthy did enough to win it. And she was fighting half-blind in the
last two rounds, but you wouldn't have known it judging from the way she
fought," said Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines Ed Picson. "But
we accept the decision, it was kind of a close fight anyway." —Marisse
