ABSTRACT

This report is based on the documentation of developing a website using HTML, Java Scripts and CSS. The web site is fully developed using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash and Adobe Dreamweaver. Introduction
This project is about designing and developing a fully working and complete navigational Web application which has the following: 1. Online News 2. Online Forum 3. Online Magazine 4. Online Auction System

This website is similar to that of a web portal in which the Online News section provides the user with latest news and updates, the Online Forum section provide the user to take part in discussions or even start a new topic in the forum, the Online Magazine provides access to various types of magazine at free of cost, also the Online Auctions helps the user to search or buy products online at competitive rates. As it performs almost all the functions of a web portal, this website is considered as a personal web portal.

1. Home Page

This is the first page of the website shown to the user when the user opens the website. On the top left side of the page there is a side-bar named Links which give direct access to sites like Digg, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube etc. At the center of the page we have included a flash animation which shows the contents of the website. 2. Online News

This is the webpage where the user can get the latest news and updates on almost all the topics. As this is done in an iframe, the user dont want to visit another website for the news, the user can stay in the website and get all the news.

3. Online Auctions

This webpage is helps the user to navigate through a number of products like Books, Apparels, Electronics etc and buy these products online. Here the user can get the products at a competitive rate.

4. Online Forum

This is the online forum where the user can have discussion on any topic with other users. Also the user can register in this forum and can also start a discussion even on any topic. For the registration the user needs to create a account, once the account is created, the details on the user is sent to the website administrators for authentication. The web administrators should authenticate the user to complete the registration.

5. Online Magazine

This webpage provides variety of magazines based on Fashion, Sports, and Technology etc. This particular section gives the user the real feel of reading a magazine. Almost all the magazines here are free of cost.

Evaluation

How it solves the existing problems?

One of the main problem is the user has to visit so many websites for different purposes. Here we solves the problem by creating a portal, where the user can use the website for different purpose like for reading news, shopping, magazines etc, the user dont want to visit other websites as this website provides all these options. The forum section helps the user to discuss about any type of topics.

Technical problems faced during development and how they were solved?

The major technical problem we faced was when we tried to implement multiple JavaScripts. There was a conflict between a normal lightbox JavaScript and mootools side-bar JavaScript. Also another problem we faced was about dynamic web pages for the online news, auctions etc.

Later we found that using an iframe can help to solve dynamic web page problem as iframes just call the dynamic webpage inside it. And for the JavaScript we found similar mootools JavaScript and integrated the scripts together to a single JavaScript which does both the functions of a side-bar and lightbox.

Shortcomings

One of the shortcomings of our site was the bandwidth limit. We have hosted our website to Brinkster (www.brinkster.com) which has a daily bandwidth of 66MB or 500MB of monthly traffic. If there are a lot of users using the website; soon after the bandwidth gets finished the website will be unavailable.

Another short coming was the compatibility issue with internet explorer; the site works fine but with some errors. These errors are due to the conflict between mootools JavaScript with the browser. Its because the browser doesnt support mootools JavaScript. But it works perfectly fine with Mozilla Firefox and other browsers

. Future Enhancements / Revisions

If there was no time constraint we should have included the following Dynamic web pages Database Implementation RSS Feeds Search Engine

Conclusions

This project has been a rich learning experience for all of us. All the levels of web designing, i.e. design, coding, animation and scripting were covered in developing an attractive and interactive website. The creative end of our minds was stretched to create an appealing and eye catching design for the layout of the website and its components. Logically it was also challenging as we faced problems in scripting two moo tools in one page, as a group we were able to overcome these problems and the end result was a fully functional website.

As we have used I-Frames and embedded sites on to our web site no day to day updating is required. This means that the website is fully functional and will still be useful in the long run.

As a whole the project was an exciting process. We were challenged, as a group and on personal levels as well, at every step. We were able to learn as we faced each challenge and tried to find the solutions.
