Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-
by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if
you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or
facilitator.

Thank you.

Activity 2: Heads or Trails!

As you go along with this lesson, you will encounter activities that will allow you to
understand better the importance of research.

Directions: Read the statements carefully. Write T if the statement is True and F if
the statement is False.

_______ 1. One of the importance of research is to enhance man’s basic life.

_______ 3. Pure Research aims to solve specific and practical problems.
_______ 4. Applied Research identifies new ideas, theories, principals and new ways
of thinking.
_______ 5. Research aims to improve educational practices.

What is It

What is RESEARCH?

Research comprises of two words, “Re” and “search”. While “Re” implies a
repetitive or iterative process, “Search” denotes, making a thorough examination of
or looking over carefully in order to find something.

Research is about analyzing a topic in a methodical and scientific way and

drawing conclusions from the results using the right logic. It is an object-oriented
process that is also systematic.

Research typically aids society in addressing the WHAT and HOW issues. It
must be a thorough inquiry that comes to a sound conclusion that will aid in
identifying the questions' answers.

Due to its broad definition, research has been defined differently by many
researchers. However, research can generally be described as a scientific process
where new facts, theories, and ideas are established and/or verified in various

fields of knowledge. The goal of research is to increase the body of knowledge so

that the world can be a better place.

Research can be categorized into two:

Pure Research
Pure research, commonly referred to as basic research, is done without a
specific goal in mind. The goal of basic research is to increase knowledge and
identify or describe relationships between variables. In this way, the basic
knowledge of the world is extended and new theories, ideas, principles and new
ways of thinking are introduced. Pure research is the source of most new
information and ideas in the world.
Pure research is driven by curiosity, intuition, and interest, and is more
exploratory in nature than applied research.

Applied Research

Applied research, in contrast to pure research, is done to solve a specific

practical problem. Applied research is used in various fields such as medicine,
technology, education and agriculture. Examples of applied research studies
include investigating links between genetics and cancer and observing children's
behavior to determine the effectiveness of various interventions. Such research
always has a specific goal. Furthermore, the results of applied research are usually
for the present, not the future. It is also important to note that applied research
always builds on information and theories discovered in basic research.

However, applied research is often based on basic research.
