CASE STUDY BASED QUESTIONS
1. Ankit wants to construct a rectangular tank for his house that can hold 80 ft3 of water. He
wants to construct on one corner of terrace so that sufficient space is left after constriction
of tank. For that he has to keep width of tank constant 5ft, but the length and heights
are variables. The top of the tank is open. Building the tank cost Rs.20 per sq. foot for the
base and Rs.10 per sq. foot for the side.

Now based on above information answer the following questions-


(i) Express cost of tank as a function of height t(h). 1
(ii) Verify by second derivative test that cost is minimum at critical point. 1
(iii) Find the value of h at which C(h) is minimum. 2

2. An open tank with rectangular base and vertical sides is to be constructed so as to hold
8000 liters of water. The tank is 2m deep and material for bottom costs rupees 1800 per
square meter and rupees 900 per square meter for vertical faces.

Now based on above information answer the following questions


(i) If x and y represents the length and breadth of rectangular base, then 2
find the total cost of construction of the base?
(ii) Find the least cost of construction of the tank? 2
3. A CEO in a company was hard working and always used new strategies for deployment
of the employees of the company’s betterment but so many times he was not able to
produce a handsome profit for his company. He planned to change his strategies and

profit and the total profit function is given by 𝑓(𝑥) = -5𝑥2 + 125𝑥 + 37500

4. Suraj’s father wants to construct a rectangular garden using brick wall on one side
(LENGTH) of the garden and wire fencing for the other three sides as shown in the
figure. He has 200 meters of fencing wire

Based on the above information answer the following questions


(i) Let x meters denote the length of the side of the garden perpendicular 2

5. An architect designs a building for a multi- national company. The floor consists of a
rectangular region with semicircular ends having a perimeter 200m.

Based on the above information answer the following questions,

6. A rectangular sheet of metal when heated, its length decreases at the rate of 5 cm/sec and
