ABE143 Problem Sets

The document contains a series of problem sets related to drying processes in agricultural products, including calculations for moisture content, energy requirements, and drying rates. Each problem addresses different scenarios involving paddy, wheat, corn, and other materials, requiring various calculations such as weight of water evaporated, area for sun drying, and heat required for drying. The problems also involve determining moisture content on both wet and dry basis, as well as using psychrometric charts for air properties.

ABE143 Problem Sets

1. Two tonnes of paddy with 22% moisture content (wb) are to be dried to 13%
moisture content (db). Calculate the weight of bone-dry product and water
evaporated during the drying.
2. Two tonnes of wheat grains are to be dried from 20% (wb) moisture content to 12%
moisture content (wb) in 2 hours using a mechanical dryer. How much air and heat
will required to dry the grains.
3. It is desired that 4 tonnes of parboiled paddy is to be dried on the open floor under
the sun from 30% to 14% moisture content (wb) during 16 hrs effective drying time.
The average rate of water removal is 0.5 kg/m2.hr, calculate the floor area required
for sun drying.
4. A sample of wheat grains was dried in a thin layer at 65°c temperature. The
moisture content at 0, 1, and 2 hours interval were 25.30, 18.50, and 15.90% (db),
respectively. Compute the EMC, Me and the value of constant k in drying rate
equation.
5. Rough rice were dried at 50°C and 60% relative humidity. The moisture content at
time 3 and 5 hours are 12.0% and 10.0%, respectively. If the drying rate constant
be 0.49 per hour, calculate the equilibrium moisture content of the sample.
6. The salted butter is produced by adding the slurry of water containing salt and
water by equal proportions in terms of weight. If the final composition of butter is
to be 16.8% moisture and 1/0% salt, calculate the original moisture content of
butter prior to salting.
7. Dried chillies (A) having a moisture content of 10% are mixed with chillies of 18%
moisture content (B) to obtain a final product of 14% moisture content. Determine
the required proportions.
8. A wet paper pulp is found to contain 71% water. After drying it is found that 60% of
the original water has been removed. Calculate the following:
a. Composition of the dried pulp
b. Mass of water removed per kilogram of wet pulp
9. Freshly harvested paddy contains 33% moisture content (db) is to be dried to 15%
moisture content (db). Calculate the energy requirement per kg of water removed
of the inlet temperature of paddy is 25% and temperature of drying is 40°C. Latent
heat of vaporization of paddy at 40°C is 2700 kJ/kg. Specific heat of paddy is
1.7kJ/kg°C.
10. The fixed market price of paddy is ₱720/quintals at 12% moisture content (wb). A
farmer is paid as ₱680/quintals for his paddy at 15% moisture content (wb).
Determine if the farmer was in loss or profit and how much?
11. A wet material is dried inside a tray using air at 65°C (db) and 50°C (wb). If the
heat transfer coefficient on the surface of material is 10 W/m2°C and the latent of
heat of vaporization of water at 65°C and 50°C are 2346 and 2406 kJ/kg,
respectively. Find the rate of drying in kg water removed per square meter of the
exposed surface per hour.
12. In a dryer 4 tones sorghum (final weight) is dried from 18% moisture content (db)
to 13% moisture content (db) per hour. Calculate the heat required for drying and
the necessary airflow rate for the dryer.
Given:
Dryer efficiency = 50%
Latent heat of evaporation = 574 kCal/kg
Specific heat of air = 0.24 kCal/kg°C
Ambient air temperature = 25°C
Specific volume of air = 0.866m3/kg
Drying air temperature = 44°C
13. A sample of corn weighing 105g is heated in an oven kept at 130°C for 30 hours.

moisture has been removed from the grain, what is the moisture content of the
grain expressed in a wet basis?
14. How many kilograms of water are lost from a tonne of paddy at 20% if the grain
moisture content changes to 15.2% w.b.?
