ECE 1101 Tutorial 1

The document is a tutorial for ECE 1101 Process Engineering Fundamentals at the National University of Science and Technology, containing various engineering problems related to gravity, flow rate, weight calculations, and chemical concentrations. It includes questions on the mass of an astronaut on Phobos, flow rate measurements using an orifice meter, and calculations involving chemical substances and their properties. The tutorial aims to enhance students' understanding of process engineering concepts through practical applications.

BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (HONS) DEGREE
ECE 1101 Process Engineering Fundamentals Tutorial 1

1. On Phobos, the inner moon of Mars, the acceleration of gravity is 3.78 ft/sec2.
Suppose that an astronaut was walking around on Phobos, and this person plus
the space suit and equipment had an earth weight of 252 lbf.

a. What is the mass in lbm of the astronaut plus suit and equipment?
b. How much would the space-suited astronaut weigh in pounds on Phobos?
2. An orifice meter is used to measure the frow rate in pipes. The flow rate is
related to the pressure drop by an equation of the form

u=c
√ ∆p
ρ
Where u = fluid velocity
∆p = pressure drop
ρ = density of the flowing fluid
c = constant of proportionality
What are the units of c in the SI system of units?
3. In the SI system of units, calculate the weight of a 180 lb man standing on the
surface of the earth.
4. If a bucket holds 2.00 lb of NaOH (mol. Wt. = 40.0),how many
a. Pound moles of NaOH does it contain?
b. Gram moles of NaOH does it contain?
5. In the production of a drug having a molecular weight of 192, the exit stream
from the reactor flows at the rate of 10.3 L/min. The drug concentration is
41.2% (in water), and the specific gravity of the solution is 1.025. Calculate the

1
concentration of the drug (in kg/L) in the exit stream and the flow rate of the
drug in kg mol/min.
6. A medium grade bituminous coal analyses as follows
Component Percent
S 2
N 1
O 6
Ash 11
Water 3
The residuum is C and H in the mole ratio H/C = 9. Calculate the weight
(mass) fraction composition of the coal with the ash and moisture omitted.

7. The heat capacity of sulphuric acid in a handbook has the units J/(gmol)(ºC)
and is given the relation
Heat capacity = 139.1 + 1.56 x 10-1 T
where T is expressed in ºC. Modify the formula so that the resulting
expression has the associated units of Btu/(lbmol)(ºR) and T is in ºR.
8. If 20,100 kg is subtracted from 22,400 kg, is the answer of 2300 kg good to four
significant figures?
9. Small animals such as mice can live at reduced air pressures down to 20 kPa
absolute (although not comfortably). In a test, a mercury manometer attached to
a tank as shown in Figure Q9 reads 64.5 cm Hg and the barometer reads 100
kPa. Will the mice survive?
