MODULES 2 TO 7 TRAINING NOTES


UE/CAUM1.2 – Maintain a Computer System

1.0 INTRODUCTION
This module covers the skills needed to keep a computer system in good working condition
through regular checks and fixes.

Learners will understand both preventive and corrective maintenance of hardware and
software systems.

2.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES


• Define maintenance and its types.

• Clean hardware parts properly.

• Troubleshoot simple hardware and software faults.

• Replace or upgrade computer components.

• Keep maintenance records.

3.0 TYPES OF MAINTENANCE


Preventive Maintenance: Carried out regularly to avoid faults. Includes cleaning,
defragmenting, and updating software.

Corrective Maintenance: Done when a problem has occurred, such as replacing a faulty hard
drive or reinstalling an OS.

4.0 CLEANING PROCEDURES


• Turn off and unplug the computer.

• Use a soft brush and air blower to remove dust from internal components.

• Wipe the monitor and keyboard with a soft, damp cloth.

• Avoid using liquids near internal parts.

5.0 TROUBLESHOOTING COMMON FAULTS

3.0 WORD PROCESSING
