Activity Sheet-Represents Real-Life Situations Using Exponential Functions

The document outlines the Grade 11 curriculum for General Mathematics at Dumangas National High School, focusing on exponential functions and their applications in real-life scenarios such as population growth, radioactive decay, and compound interest. It provides definitions and formulas for exponential functions, along with tasks for students to model bacterial growth, radioactive decay, and compound interest calculations. The document emphasizes the differences between exponential, linear, and quadratic functions.

Activity Sheet
The learner represents real-life situations using exponential functions. M11GM-Ie-3

Exponential functions are quite different from other algebraic functions, like the linear and the
quadratic functions. The exponential function of the form f ( x )=2x should not be confused with the
linear function f (x)=2 x , nor with the quadratic function ( x )=x 2.
The exponential function with base b is defined by the equation f ( x )=b x, but f (x)= y therefore
y=b where b> 0 but not equal to 1. x is any real number.

Population growth, exponential decay, and compound interest are some of the most common
applications in real-life of exponential functions.

Exponential Models and Population Growth

Suppose a quantity N doubles every T units of time. If N 0 is the initial amount, then the quantity N
t
after t units of time is given by y= y 0 ( 2 ) T

Task 1: At the start of an experiment, there are 500 bacteria. Suppose that the bacteria
doubles every 5 hours. Give an exponential model for the bacteria as a function
of t .
At t=0 , the number of bacteria = 500, find the number of bacteria at t=5, t=10,
t=15, t=20

Exponential Functions and Half-life

Half-life of a radioactive substance is the time it takes for half of the substance to decay.
If the half-life of a substance is T units, and y 0 is the amount of the substance corresponding to t=0,

( ).
t
1
then the amount y of substance remaining after t units of time is given by y= y 0 T
2

Task 2: Suppose the half-life of certain radioactive substance is 20 days and there are 30 grams
initially. Determine the amount of substance remaining after 40 days, and give the
exponential model for the amount of the remaining substance.

Compound Interest
If a principal P is invested at an annual rate r , compounded annually, then the amount after t
years is given by
t
A=P ( 1+r )

Task 3: Waling-waling invested ₱ 500,000 in a company that offers 6% interest compounded

annually. Define an exponential model for this situation, how much will this
investment be worth at the end of 5 years?
